The trailer for the new Mortal Kombat game shows a true return to form, with 2D battles, tag-team fighting, gory inside-look combos, and fatalities so cruel you'll be crossing your legs with sympathy pains.

This is the Mortal Kombat fans have been craving. No complicated 3D camera. No toned-down violence to cater to the teen crowd. Just 1-on-1 fighting with the sort of brutal violence that drew fans to the series in the first place.

I especially like the inside-look combo that occurs towards the end of the trailer, peeling back layers of flesh and muscle to show the impact of hits directly on the bones. It's nasty and satisfying at the same time.

We'll just try not to think about the fact that Kung Lao is now wearing a hat covered in Sub-Zero's testicle blood.

so they are copying sf4 return to roots... no wait we are going back to 2d combat we came from ?

makes me think of the cpu going all gpu interface on our asses and then just to return to the 'socket' it came from

I don't think tekken has ever been 2d?

I don't mind. I have not played mortal kombat since deception.
 
Fighting takes place on a 2d plane even though the models and environment is actually all in 3d including fatalities it seems.

Basically the game-play is MK2 meets MK3. Everything after MK3 felt like a downgrade to me gameplay wise...

Mk3s problem was scorpion was not there. Sub-zeros brother was awesome. I liked cyrax and sector. I liked the characters and the arenas(don't forget about the uppercut into another arena.) I loved mk2 as well:D

I hope the fatalities are super gory:D
 
I've been saying this ever since I started playing SF4...Mortal Kombat needs to go back to 2D. I really enjoyed all the MK's till they moved over to 3D.
I'm really excited about this :D The game looks awesome

Just read some more on this. It's scheduled for release in 2011 and it's coming to XBOX 360 and PS3.

This is the game I've been waiting for. NO OTHER GAME MATTERS TO ME NOW.

Did you notice that MK2 on the PS3 is the exact same version from the arcade? lol - I noticed that the other day when I saw the "free play" text and the "DCS" sound system add that was present in the original game cabinets.
