NCsoft and Carbine Studios announced today at GamesCom a new MMO, called WildStar.

WildStar offers epic high adventure, where players make their mark as Explorers, Soldiers, Scientists or Settlers and lay claim to a mysterious planet on the edge of known space.

WildStar's iconic visual style and "Momentum Mechanics" immerse players in a deep world stacked with content, challenges and rewards that respond to the play style choices of individual players. Depending on a combination of faction, race, class, and path, WildStar will present gamers with unending surprises, mini-quests and challenges, ensuring that their experiences are fun and fresh.

The part I hate about cinematic trailers are that they get you hyped about a game because what an artist did in Maya looked cool, not the game itself.

I want gameplay footage!

Unless there are no NPC's in this game, I'll give it a skip.

lol ... in which case you would have to rely on the game's community to keep you entertained. And the thing I've noticed about MMO communities - if there's nothing to do, all they do is whine.

Also, where would your quests come from?

Having watched the trailer - lol? It looks like cross between Borderlands, Tera and Toy Story.

I would rather see this as a co-op type game like borderlands than a mmo.
The whole story and trailer looks like it could do extremely well and be super fun in that type of set up.

The point I was making is I dont like MMO's that rely on quests, PVE or scripted content and characters.

For instance, a game where the people you fight are real people. You fight over territories which are rich in resources and high value mobs. You build infrastructure which then gives you the incentive to defend or expand, and also gives you a reason to play.

The only game that comes close to that is Eve-Online. However Eve still has a mission/quest system, so it is not exactly free of it. Luckily in the next year they will be doing away with that system completely, and replacing it with a player driven quest system where you can give/get quests from other real players (both parties get a share of the profit). Dust514 will probably have a similar system as the two games share a lot of tech.

MMO's like WoW are really just co-op games.

An English developer walkthrough is up on Gametrailers.com. Would be nice if MyGaming updated the video embed plugin to support them.

Actually, Star Wars Galaxies didn't have any NPC's (besides quest givers and such) which made it about completely sandbox, and was one of the, if the the best, MMO that I've played. Sure it takes a bit initiative from the player, but it was absolutely fucking awesome (Pre-NGE mostly).

WildStar features 3 races. The Humans, the Granok(s) and the Aurin.

During the GamesCom show, Carbine presented the 3 classes - Warrior, Spellsinger and Esper. Although they seem like they are gender-locked, they aren't. Carbine stated that once the games goes into Beta / Live, players will be able to mix and match races and classes. Awesome !
