For the first time since its inception in 1996, Super Rugby will take on a whole new look in 2011

The fifteen teams will take part in a three-conference format which will see all of the teams in each conference tackle each other home and away; supplemented with inter-conference games and culminating in a new, six-team finals series.

The Super Rugby competition will not only expand to 15 teams in 2011, it will also undergo a significant format revamp. A new three-conference system will be in place where the five teams within each country will make up nationally-based conferences and play their four “local” rivals on a home and away basis (eight games in total).

They will also play four of the other five teams in each of the other two conferences on a home or away basis (another eight games). This leads to an overall program of 16 games per team in the regular season, as opposed to the current 13.

A three-week finals series involving six teams, as opposed to the current two-week play-offs for four teams, will further increase the length of the season.

At the end of the regular season matches, the top team in each conference will qualify for the finals. The other three teams to qualify will be the sides with the most number of competition points, regardless in which conference they are based.

The conference winners are also ensured of a home finals match. Therefore, at least one finals match will be played in each country each year

I'm not too sure about the new format, if I wanted more local derbies than I'll rather watch the currie cup. Even the new logo looks lame.

really. it makes no sense, when the super 15 was first proposed early last year, they said they were gonna gear it for LESS rugby so that domestic comps like our Currie Cup and the ITM cup from NZ get more time, i guess the ARU threw that idea away as they don't have anything remotely similar...

Maybe its because of the new stadiums that's standing empty and now they have to jump and make plans to somehow cover them.

I have not really kept up to date on those stuff but that comes to my mind first.

This doesnt make sense to me...
So a SA team will play their other local teams twice each (home and away)(8 games)
They they only play 4 of the other ten International teams twice each (home and away)(8 games)

Thats really stupid...

The players are going to be sif come the end of year tours. And by sif, I mean even worse than they currently are.

Look at the stormers for instance. They get a bye on the 1st weekend of the competition. Big freaking whoop. How on earth does that help?

This has become all about making certain people as much money as possible at the expense of the players and the fans. Yeah, derbies are cool and all, but Super Rugby for me is about seeing how our boys do against the overseas boys, not to see them play local teams every weekend practically. That's what the Currie Cup is for.
