And what happens if that fails? If you plead to the better nature of your kid and he learns to ignore you because there are no further consequences?
I'm not saying there shouldn't be consequences, I'm saying that the punishment does not necessarily have to be corporal. As an example, my boss is an extremely "hippy" parent who never even shouts at her kids, never mind takes a hand to them; they're punished in far more creative ways. Surprisingly, I've never seen two more well-behaved, well-adjusted five-year olds in my life. On the flip side though, I have a mollycoddled cousin who's an awful terrorist of a child. Go figure.
I think it depends on the individual family and its culture and values, plus the age of the kids, and a whole bunch of other factors. And who knows, I may lose my shit with my kid one day and decide on the spot that the best course of action is indeed a klap; again, not something I can decide until I actually have said kid. However, my own personal approach will always be respect first.
Should that fail though, can I pop round your place to borrow a wooden spoon?![]()

As I've been saying for years, it's just not viable raising a child in this country anymore. For more than one reason, including shit like this. Or am I the only one that feels this way?
As per my previous reply in this thread, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

I got the belt and I grew up fine.
I think it's to protect some people that take it too far. I work in retail and we caught a 5 year old stealing, called the mother over then we had to call security because she had punched him one shot onto the floor and was ready to have another go. It took 4 people to calm her down, I felt bad for the kid.
Seriously, there's a smack as a disciplinary warning and punishment (getting a belt across the ass), then there is abuse like above.

I still don't see how this law will protect the child from abuse ( other than giving children smacks at home...smacks not pure abuse). Child abuse is rife in this country but people would have reported people children before this law.
