New SSD advice please...

Do you current SSD owners think 128gb is enough ? That transcend drive for R937 looks attractive,

If it's OS only then its fine, but if you're even considering putting a few games on there then the 250GB drives are a minimum.

you can POSSIBLY get away with the 120, if you move your "my documents/videos/music" folder location away from the ssd, something you probably wanna do anyway as media files dont really benefit from the speed, and it will save you some read/write on the drive apart from the capacity benefit.

Brand new owner of an SSD here :D, but I think that 128GB is just a little too small. My previous drive was formatted so that the OS partition was around 100GB. I ran out of space on that very quickly just from installing a few programs that I needed as well as save game files etc.

I specifically bought the 256GB version so that I have enough space for the OS etc. as well as a couple of games.

Yeah leaning towards the 256gb, will be ordering it today hopefully. Will only put a few demanding games on that drive, well that's the theory.

Go for it. That special looks pretty limited, so if you want the Crucial SSD from Wootware, then I'd go for it sooner rather than later.

This is the one I'm looking at http://www.takealot.com/transcend-ssd370-2-5-inch-sata-3-solid-state-drive-256gb/PLID32837003

I want to go through takelot as I have vouchers to be used, I'm just a bit worried why the transcend drives are so much cheaper?

Edit: The Joker sorry to ping you, but would you be able to shed some light on this, is there a reason transcend SSD's seem so much cheaper?

Transcend SSD's generally use JMICRON JMF667H controllers and they have pretty poor reliabillity, or I should say they used to be really poor when it came to ssd controller failure. They also have a HUGE range of ssd's, its really important to check out each specific ssd's read/write performance.

That specific ssd you've linked there uses a decent controller and is ok value for money but its pretty poor in the sequential write department, in fact its one of the slowest ssd's when it comes to that. Other than that its decent, I would however rather look at a crucial BX100, they are quite a bit faster (Sequential write speed is double that of the transcend), they use the same controller and I think they cost about the same.

I have a 128gb crucial for windows and a 256gb Samsung for my games.

Once u own a SSD u will never go back im afraid. So for any new potential owners out there keep this in mind ;-)

Awesome thanks, Will be ordering it today!

Wanted to go through takealot but this wootware special seems too good.

EDIT: The Joker - What about this guy ? http://www.takealot.com/ocz-arc-100-2-5-ssd-240gb/PLID33054507

This is a comparison between the OCZ Arc 100 and the Crucial MX100 , is the crucial that much better for the extra price? http://ssd.userbenchmark.com/Compare/OCZ-ARC-100-240GB-vs-Crucial-MX100-256GB/2603vs2317

That is the EXACT one I got...it was best bang for buck I could find, I'm not interested in the micro differences between certain SSD's which isnt even noticeable for that price bump :P

I've gone ahead and ordered the Crucial drive, they had no stock of the OCZ one, so I just took the plunge!

That was the one I eyed for months, its got a hell of alot of good press and reviews backing it up, I highly doubt you'll be disappointed with your choice. Do enjoy :)

Samsung SSD's or OCZ SSD's

don't go for any other brand

I have 2 256's in my pc running RAID 0 and it's a gem it truly is.

If I didn't have so much on my OS drives I might consider upgrading to RAID 5 but I will do that after it fails ( I decided that when I put it in, when or if it fails I will get RAID 5)

So far the most I've had is a crash and had to set raid back up in BIOS (due to eskom load shedding whcih tripped the power)

Not even so much as a BSOD :D

Welcome to the dark side...

good grief raid 5 on SSDs... that seems like proper overkill!

Arent u shortening the life of ur drives using Raid 5? Im sure the parity will cause extra read/writes, shortening the life of the drives?

I would argue it would be better to just get WD normal drives and go raid 10.

For the money here is your link proof why I said OCZ:

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/ssd-recommendation-benchmark,3269.html

Crucial are fantastic but not the best price for what you pay ;)

No idea why Samsung didn't make that list though they were still one of the top 4 in Dec 2014

To the other guys, sure I lessen my writes with that, but hey insurance is a wonderful thing ;)

I myself have an OCZ so dunno what you were gaining there. My query was why you say NO other brand should even be looked at? THAT is what my post was focusing on, not asking why those 2 brands are good :P

So you commit insurance fraud because you shorten the life of your ssd's and then can't be bothered just to buy new ones? Rather make a false claim and get them for free?
