Next Gen Consoles? More like 30 fps gen consoles

The Joker

Thread Killer MKII
So after digging about I found an alarming amount of "next gen" console games that will be running at 30fps because the games aren't "Action games".

The list so far:

Bloodbourne locked at 30fps

Dark Souls developer From Software prefers 30fps for its upcoming PlayStation 4 action game, Bloodborne. Speaking with PlayStation Lifestyle, Producer Masaaki Yamagiwa stated that they “haven’t made an official announcement yet but they will probably go for 30fps since that’s what they found to be the best fps (frames-per-second) to play action games.”

He added “from the beginning, they weren’t targeting 60fps because it’s not first-person-shooter, it’s an action game.”

I pissed myself laughing at that rubbish.

Assassin’s Creed Unity locked to 900p @ 30 fps for both Xbox One and PS4

Must be part of Ubisofts "games are better at 30fps" bullshit

Far Cry 4 locked at 30 fps

More utter crap lol

Ubisoft: Microsoft and Sony demand PC games to be locked at 30fps

Yeah blame Sony and Microsoft...lol

Seems like they have already hit the limit with what the consoles can do and now they're making up bullshit excuses...Good Game "whistling:

Oh and before anyone comes in here and says that it makes no difference or its not noticeable, please have your eyes tested. For further proof please play Dark Souls 2 on PC at 60fps and then tell me that 30fps is ok...

Well, mister Masaaki Yamagiwa, games are not movies.

LDS (Lazy Developer Syndrome).

I doubt they've hit the limit of what the consoles can do yet. I think it's just a case of still figuring out how best to optimise for them. Naughty Dog stated they'd maxed what the PS3 could do when they released Uncharted 2. Now compare Uncharted 2 to The Last of Us, which puts a lot of 'next gen' games to shame. I'm 99% positive we'll be seeing more 60fps games later in their lifespan. It's not a big deal to me, but I can understand the upset.

Well unfortunately its not like the old consoles where they learned over time how to optimize for them. These machines both run the exact same architecture as PC (X86), something that's been available for years. Its not really a question of optimization, more a question of what features to include and at what frames and resolution to lock it so it maintains playable frames.

There is already rumor of a more powerful Xbox One launching in the next 2 years, not sure about PS4.

This is my favourite bit:

Unity creative director Alex Amancio is also featured in the interview, talking about the game's frame rate and saying resolution is not always the most important element for a game.

"30 was our goal, it feels more cinematic," he said. "60 is really good for a shooter, action adventure not so much. It actually feels better for people when it's at that 30fps. It also lets us push the limits of everything to the maximum. It's like when people start asking about resolution. Is it the number of the quality of the pixels that you want? If the game looks gorgeous, who cares about the number?"

60 is really good for a shooter, but we're going to lock our shooter to 30 anyway.

Even so, I still think they'll eventually figure out/develop ways to work around it and maintain the 60fps. Create new engines that do or load things in different ways etc. I'm happy to be proven wrong, but I still think the PS4/One games released in 5 years will look and play substantially better than what we are seeing now. If not, I have a PC too if I really want dem fps's.

Yeah, only Ubisoft lol

We'll have to wait and see, they might squeeze another 15% performance out of them but that'll be that. The hardware in the consoles can't do more than that, no matter what the devs do.

Some new info on Bloodbourne just popped up, The dev's quote was translated wrong it turns out he said they'll be aiming for 60fps.
So a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel...I still have a feeling this game might hit 60fps once every now and again but if I had to guess the avg fps will probably around 35 or so with min fps around 15-20fps. Not exactly stellar performance from a R7000 console and a R750 game.

The problem IMHO is partly lazy developers, and its not just on the gaming end of things, I see it with all developers. Back in the 80's and 90's when systems had very limited memory and very limited CPU cycles developers had to learn how to optimize their code in such a way as to not use up all of the 640k of available memory, etc etc. Memory management and doing things in the most efficient way was absolutely key. Developers are not even being taught properly how to optimize and manage memory utilization these days. I even had a "hotshot" developer (read 23 year old fresh out of varsity that managed to land a nice developer job) tell me that he doesn't need to optimize his code because the compiler takes care of it. *BOOM* mind explodes.

TL:DR Devs are lazy and need to man up and learn from the previous generation

It makes no difference, to me of course.

Let's not beat around the bush here. We all know you're a PC master race fan boy Joker, and I don't hate on you for it. I myself have a decent gaming computer, as you know. I own both version of Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2, PC and PS3 (I've put in >400hours on PS3 against PC approx 50hours). Yet still I would rather choose to play it on my PS3 with dummed down graphics and worse fps than it's PC bretheren, because it feels better. Yes I can see (more like feel) the difference between the 30fps and 60fps cap, it's one of the first things you notice when playing TLoU:Remastered.

I have been playing Forza Horizon 2 on my Xbone non-stop. This is a game that is locked at 30fps, and I'm fine with it. I would much rather be playing a title that is locked at a certain fps and be constant, than bounce around and fluctuate.

Not hating on you either but this next gen console nonsense is now starting to have a negative impact on PC gaming.
You did see the post I made where Sony and Microsoft want devs to start limiting pc gameplay to 30 fps right?

Evil Within launched with 30 fps not long ago, after a huge backlash from the pc community they finally patched it so it ran at 60fps. It was more than capable of running 60fps but "consoles"

So it has nothing to do with fanboynism, it has to do with the poor performance of the current gen consoles and how they're already hitting a wall performance wise...less than 2 years into their respective life cycles.

I am well aware how awesome Forza horizon 2 is (I've played it quite a bit at a friends house) but what is forza really? It's a gorgeous racing game with not much else going on, there aren't thousands of objects all over the map so yes it'll perform well, yet they've still had to limit it so it runs smooth. Just proving my point again.

I promise you go play Forza Horizon 2 at 60fps (It'll never happen I know) and you'll see what I am on about.
Do yourself a favor, seeing as Youtube is now finally supporting 60fps vids, go watch a gameplay vid running at 60fps @ 1080P and then tell me 30fps is perfectly fine and acceptable and tell me how its ok for devs to just straight up lie to us.

Edit: I am also shocked that people defend practices like this and actually try and say its ok? Reminds me of the Watch Dogs thread.

Don't get me wrong either, not hating on you or PC gamers. I am not trying to justify the development of games or the respective developers. All I'm merely trying to get at is the purpose of, does it really matter?

The analogy I'm trying to get at is similar to something I've learned in photography, the hardware doesn't always matter, you can still take a great picture with an old camera. ie. buy film, not megapixels.

Do they frames really matter if they can't get or make an enjoyable title. Take a look at TLoU:Remastered, a lot of people actually change the setting from 60fps cap to 30fps, for a better "feel".

I find it hard to put what I'm trying to say down, so I just hope you get the point I'm trying to make.

Unfortunately most developers are going to focus on console games first and PC games second, because console titles simply sell better and piracy is a lot harder, if not impossible in some cases. I think what we should really be angry at is that very few developers decide from the get-go: "Let's make an epic PC exclusive game". They have the hardware to make incredible games, yet very few people would be able to play them due to the expensive hardware required so it never happens, which is a real shame. It's for this reason more than any other that PC gaming is being held back, I believe. Sony and Microsoft, as much as they may have some bad business practices, want their consoles to sell and sell well, so it's not hard to understand why they try and make the usually lower selling PC ports seem on par with the console versions they want to sell their systems.

I sort of get what you mean.

What I am trying to say is this.

It feels like devs are moving backwards, on top of that they're blatantly lying, saying things like they're trying to give games a more cinematic experience or telling us that 60 fps is only needed for fps games and in the same breath saying that their next gen fps game is running at 30fps on next gen consoles. Then they try make this move on PC gaming.

This is not progress.

Very true and you're hitting the nail on the head. They are now trying to force this crap on PC gaming.

Edit: I game at 120fps, I push my rig to the absolute limit to get the most performance out of it, I'll never be able to go back to 60fps, gaming at a 120hz is an awesome and smooth experience now I am being forced to play at 30fps...No thanx. If this is the way the gaming industry is heading I think its time for me to stop gaming.

I think it's more of a fact of them trying to keep the titles uniform across multiple platforms, in an attempt to maybe keep the peace per se. But as usual, this will cause a stir in the PC market.

On the same point, you could argue the similar fact with resolutions. You look at all the games that are releasing with just off 1080p res, like 900p. Does the extra 180p really make a difference or will it be noticeable? Then it comes down to a matter of not taking the time to research and develop the game fully to accommodate the 1080p. Then you also come down to the point of being able to release on deadlines, while at the same time trying to compete with an opposition title.

Or change to console =P

Its not uniformity, they are ruining the gaming industry.

Posted this thread for anyone that is actually interested in the whole 30vs60 fps issue.
You'll see exactly how developers are blatantly lying and cashing in on their lies.

I'm not a stickler for 60fps, I can deal with 30 just fine as I have been both a console and PC player since I first started gaming.

However I would always take 60 over 30 if it is an option, which is why I primarily game on PC, but if it's a console exclusive and it's 30fps, then so be it, I don't really care that much as long as the game is good (Last of Us PS3 being my favorite game of all time is proof enough).

I think the thing is that they can guarantee consistent 30 fps, where they cannot offer 60 consistently. If this is the case, I would rather have a consistent 30fps than getting spikes up to 60, then a drop down to 15 frames, for example.

That is why TV at 24fps looks smooth... because it's a consistent frame rate.

Look to me I definitely agree with Joker, Iv spent 7k on my PS4, I want 60fps... I also want 1080p... I dont care if I can tell the difference or not, but better quality gaming is the whole reason for upgrading your console...

This bullshit of locking a game at 30fps is retarded... The PS3 rand games at 30fps, you cant tell me the PS4 is not miles ahead of the near 10 year old PS3...

I find it very interesting the mention of a more powerful X Box 1 launching... Any Sauce with that?
