SO next year is seeing some amazing titles being released , witcher and dragon age being on the top of my list, a question arises though how long before the 1st to 4th generation I5 cpu's wont cut it anymore for games?

Granted mostly we just drop a gpu in and problem solved and i'm saving up for just that next year, but im wondering with the rise of more cpu intensive games like skyrim whats going to happen longevity wise with cpu's, any thoughts?

Yeah.. To the people (like me) who still want build themself a pc it's getting more and more expensive because if we want to play the new games in good quality we have to get the fancy stuff.. :(

To your first question: when the minimum system specs for the game say CPU 8 cores :p
I doubt it'll be such a drastic leap in the next 2 years as to phase out core i5's.
I have a 3 year old i5 750, OC'd to 3.4Ghz, running most games on max, without AA.

Your 2nd question: The hardware industry pumps out a new generation every year - so you have the option of upgrading every year. This relates to my first point about min specs.

Now the question for me is how well the "next gen" devs can squeeze every drop of performance from the hardware? This determines the how long that minimum specs bar below our salary :p

Best to have a console,I mean a graphic card that will play everything at top Frames will cost you like R5000.

Market will mostly dictate price and min requirements. The only huge change i have seen which forces a hardware purchase in the past is the AGP to PCI-e slot change and the move from Directx 10 to 11.

I am certain the dev's can make a game that pushes the limits, however they funding for this usually comes from us as the consumers. Totally ruling out a proc that is 2 or 3 years old would be shooting themselves in the foot really.
