Next Gen Stagnation: Sacrificing Gameplay for Graphics

This guy has a point. I really do feel that the AAA industry places far too much emphasis on graphical fidelity. I think this "problem" can be very easily solved by moving away from the big AA games and into the indie scene, which is something he doesn't mention, strangely. AAA titles are good at throwing large piles of money at games, which is why we don't see a lot of innovation in terms of gameplay from them.

This has been happening since at least N64 days... I said the exact same the same basic thing to my friends dad while my buddy was jumping around like a knob so he could hear the character go "Hup!" every time he jumped. "It sounds so good!"

I regret not shaking my keys in his face. He probably would have had a ball.

There are a good number of games that get the graphics right without sacrificing gameplay imo but then I guess it depends on what kind of games you like to play. For example The Order 1886 looks so gorgeous but most people will write it off due to its linearity and QTE's, whereas I have no issue with those things.

The problem I have the The Order is the blatant lying by it's developers. "The reason why our game is in this weird widescreen mode is because it makes it more "'cinematic'". No it doesn't! It's like that because you have 25% less pixels on the sceen because of that strange resolution, so you can add in more effects to make the game prettier. Of course, this is coming from the same people who say that 30FPS is great for action games. Even after gutting the resolution, you still can't make it run at 60FPS. :D

Other than that, the game looks average. Incredibly average. QTE's, ugh, I despise those. They serve no purpose other than to ruin the buttons on my controller. It's a conspiracy, I tell you ;)

Yea exactly you can't compare an open world 3rd person shooter with a game like The Order, they are completely separate genre's almost. The Order has a certain story to tell in a particular way, and that's just the type of game it is (okay QTE's can be annoying if overdone). Look at the Last of Us, that is linear and people love it.

Sorta off topic, but I think the problem with the "Next Gen" is that there wasn't a big enough technological jump between PS3 / 360 & the PS4/Xbone, and we got so used to seeing amazing graphics on PC and even last gen. After moving onto PS2 from PS1 I remember being in awe of the graphics, it seemed ridiculous at the time. But now times have changed and we are so much more exposed to the industry and seeing games well before they are released, that there is just no more surprise.

Don't get me wrong games like the Order and the Division are looking amazing, but because I have seen all the gameplay videos and previews you sorta know what to expect. There is nothing wrong with that, Its just hard nowadays to be truly surprised by the next "AAA" game". I suppose that is what is great about the rising Indie scene, well I suppose it has already risen, it's now just growing.

Again, different strokes for different folks. I think it looks amazing. I love RPG's and good open world titles as much as the next guy, but I also quite enjoy a good one-time 'experience' game like The Order. So long as the experience is good, which it looks to be :).
