Nine things that suck about 3D

Well I tend to agree with the writer. yes, 3D in the cinema is awesome when watching Avatar, but I somehow don't see it happening at home. I can't imagine my wife wearing those goofy glasses to watch a movie. Or probably more appropriate in my house would be the dogs chowing the damn glasses just before I wanna watch.

And the cost is going to be seriously prohibitive for a long time, especially in he current economical climate. Many people have just managed to do the upgrade to LCD and now in a few months they are gonna be told their TV's are old technology. Don't expect them to be buying 3D anytime soon. And that's just the TV. What about a 3D player?

No, great idea, but somethings are just more fun in a cinema and 3D is one of them!

yeah to be quite honest i'm not sold on this whole 3d bit either.

dunno, i just think we don't need it

Well, apparently I'm one of only a handful of people that owns a PC 3D setup I can list my drawbacks based on first hand experience. I'd also like to point out that the Nvidia Stereoscopic 3D solution is exactly the same as that used by LG, Samsung and Sony. I've seen a demo of the new LG 3D technology and can confirm this.

- The active shutter glasses are very dark when activated. Which means your bright LCD monitor loses about 50% of the light coming from it before it hits your eyes. This is a VERY annoying part of the technology.

- Games lose a massive amount of performance. Up to 50% is lost immediately. Unacceptable. You need a MONSTER of a PC to run games in Stereo 3D.

I'd like to point out that not everyone will get headaches from using 3D glasses. Some people will even get motion sickness, but that's not the technology's fault...it's a human issue. I get a massive headache from wearing my normal day-to-day glasses sometimes, it doesn't mean my glasses are wonky...it means I GOT A HEADACHE - POP A PILL MAN!

The upsides to 3D? Well...there are many. But truth must be told in that you cannot explain it to someone else. If you haven't experienced 3D gaming first hand, you simply won't know.

As for the home cinema adoption - I just spent R70,000 on a Television a year ago. I'm NOT going to replace it with a "3D" model because it would be a step down for me. So as far as 3D movies are concerned, I'll watch them on my PC :)

As a matter of interest, the LG 55" LED LCD Borderless 3D TV which I saw in Gateway recently was selling for R56,000. This immediately made me realize that 3D Television in South Africa will probably not take off, and if it does, it will take years.

Nice article TinMan!!

Holy mother of #@%$! Is that maybe a 3D holographic TV? What did you spend R70k on? Seriously, what kind of TV is that?

X gen is interactive holographic projection , Sony is R&D the concept they believe that there 3d additions are refined enough to look at new concepts.

lol There are quite a few lcd's with that sort of price tag mate. Its all in the size..lol:)

Ja I know, but what I find funny is these okes who spend a small African countires GDP on a massive screen, but his TV room is the size of a matchbox!! That is really just pointless. You sit so damn close to the screen and you get fishbowl eyes and sun stroke from watching Baywatch from that close. Not worth it. Rather save cash and buy somehting that suits your room.

PS, R900k is utterly f|_|cking nuts!!! 108" is insane. Rather just build a damn cinema room!

Yeah I'm not sold on the whole 3D buzz either. The biggest factor is the price to entry is way too high. You need a 3D compatible screen, the shutter glasses and for gaming a fairly fast graphics card. I can think of much better ways to spend that kind of money.

There are other longer term effects they've not explored, remember this is a way of tricking your brain into thinking the image is 3-D. Just a little more advanced then when you squinted your eyes at those 3D pics in the You. Those headaches being experienced is not a good thing.

Initially this technology is going to be limited by many factors that have been mentioned. But like most technology the price will drop over time, it will work better, be less clunky, and be properly supported by many 3rd parties.

What that will mean for gaming? I am not 100% sure. But I believe games and hardware designed to work for 3D will be amazing, but only once the technology has matured.

I seldom buy into new technology and its hype until it stabilizes somewhat. It is expensive, and often replaced with something far superior in a few months. Give 3D in gaming some time develop and it should be worth it. Anyone writing it off permanently just because it is new and lacking, is short sighted.

Hehehe :) I bought this TV:

http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/.../PS63A750T1FXXY/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail

It's a 63" Plasma. To date I believe it's still regarded as the best plasma TV Samsung ever made. I've been enjoying it ever since I bought it. So far the only TV to catch my attention again and made me wish I held out a bit longer is that 55" LG LED LCD Borderless TV. It really is awesome to look at, even when it's off! lol.

Oh, I would also like to add this: If you have a large TV, it does NOT mean you need a massive room to watch it in. I watch Blu-Ray movies and primarily Discovery HD - When it comes to HD content there is NO need to sit miles away from the TV...that theory has been laid to rest now. Imagine if that theory ever held water...you'd have to sit 2 miles away when watching an IMAX movie. This is a LARGE screen with EPIC detail. You actually WANT to sit close.

If I can boast (which I really shouldn't because everything I have is a blessing from God); my soundsystem consists of Onkyo and Jamo :D Though when it comes to speakers and amplifiers...I have the entry level stuff. I'm not in the mood to spend R200,000 on speakers just yet lol

To be really honest with you guys....I'm thinking of rather going for a projector setup next time round when we move into a bigger place. My wife will absolutely LOL her head off if she saw me typing this coz she's very pro-projector.

"1. You have to wear dorky glasses."

Parallax 3D don't need glasses. Sure, you need to be at a certain angle to the TV but it takes away the silly glasses. Rumour is that the Nintendo 3DS is looking at this as an option, and it sound like it might work - when are you looking at a DS at strange angles? (and if you do, apparently you'll only see 1 image and not this blurred stuff)

"2. It downscales your games."

Which I think might be a good thing, considering that there have been no real advances in 3D games quality, somehow it's not justifiable to buy a top end graphics cards.

"3. Headaches."

Yeah, 3D movies actually lose it for me, sometimes it get "confused" by the image and I need to refocus what I'm looking at. Also you lose alot of detail in the movie (Alice). I dont like 3d too much. But I did play borderlands with the nvidia 3D thing enabled, and for games it seems to be a lot more enjoyable.

"4. Expensive. "

Yeah... but that's the whole point I think. 3 years ago "buy this HD READY tv", 2 years "buy this FULL-HD tv" and now today "buy this 3D [with glasses] tv" and next year it'll be "buy this True 3d ready without glasses TV (1 angle), and year after " buy this true Full-3d tv (can be viewed at 42 different angles)"

"5. Widespread adoption is far away. "

Yeah, we haven't even got complete HD adoption here in SA yet! (We arent even completely digital yet!)

"6. People reaching out in real life."

0.o

"7. The current generation isn’t powerful enough."

"8. Confusing terminology. Ok, so we had 2D games, and then they started looking like 3D, but they were really 2D. And then they came out with seemingly better 3D, but in reality it was only a kind of 2.5D, which was really 2D. Then they introduced “real 3D”, and even then some were still only really 2D. Now, everything is 3D, even the 2D games, although they are not dedicated 3D. Eventually, everything will apparently be in 3D, all 3D and 2D games. Confused yet?"

And 3D isnt true 3D, it's 2 2D images that trick you to think it's 3D but is really not!

"9. The pile of stuff that you’ll be left with when the fad dies. Let’s face it, it’s only a matter of time before everybody gets over the whole 3D fad and finds something else expensive and overhyped to cram down our throats. Super-HD, only on Xbox 720 and requiring a new, Super-HD compatible TV and special solid gold cables, coming soon!"

Yeah, and following that "Super HD-3D tvs!"

Yeah I tend to agree with keldarza. Half of the reasons given fall into either: 'Zomz technology is expensive' or: 'technology increases too quickly let me just play my xbox in peace'.... which reasons actually nullify one another.

Its also bias towards people with glasses, u know how uncomfortable those glasses are over ur own specs?

At least you can wear them over your own spec, unlike those useless blu/red 3D glasses! My problem with the current 3D tv glasses that sync much like the nvidia idea is that I can actually see them flashing. I believe they flicker at about 60Hz [correct me if I'm wrong] and it's horribly distracting.

If any of you want to go and check out a 3D tv [with glasses], Dion wired at Cedar Square (in fourways - randburg) has one on display playing 3D movies for you to test.
