Nintendo's Next System Is Code-Named The NX

At a press conference announcing their big mobile gaming deal, Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has also spoken briefly (and surprisingly) about Nintendo's next piece of dedicated hardware.

Seeking to put off questions that Nintendo's future would be entirely mobile, Iwata says that Nintendo is still very much in the "dedicated video game system market", and that their next piece of gaming hardware is code-named the "NX".

"Nintendo has decided to deploy its video game business on smart devices, but it is not because we have lost our passion or vision for the business of dedicated video game systems", he said.

"On the contrary, because now we have decided on how we will make use of smart devices, we have come to hold an even stronger passion and vision for the dedicated video game system business than before."

"As proof that Nintendo maintains strong enthusiasm for the dedicated game system business", Iwata adds, "let me confirm that Nintendo is currently developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development codename 'NX'."

And...that's it. Iwata says Nintendo will share more information about the new hardware "next year".

While it's easy to suspect that this new device will be a replacement for the ailing Wii U, the fact this is Nintendo using the words "brand new concept" mean it could be anything.

Nintendo always have the ability to surprise... They are a great company that have a hell of a lot to offer the gaming world...

I sometimes do feel thought that they should focus on what they do best, which is the games, and maybe not try lock people into their console and rather make more money selling games cross platform... I think it would make more sense from a business point of view...

I wouldn't trade in my Wii-U or 3DS XL for anything else on the market.

Seriously? I find that very interesting to hear! What games are you playing on the Wii U that keep you on the Nintendo console?

Well I wonder what the new concept, they brought back motion controlled gaming exceptionally with the Wii, but I wonder what the next big thing will be other than VR, that's something everyone is trying out now anyway, and if the announcement is only next year we will already have a few VR headsets in the market, so I doubt it is that.

Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros Wii-U are some of my favourites atm.

Eyeing a couple of others like Bayonetta 1/2, and hyrule warriors.

I'll believe it when I see it. Not jumping on the Nintendo hype train any longer.
They got left in the dust badly by Sony and MS.

With the new 3DS console I'd say that part of their business is safe for now..
Maybe another home console?
Maybe they're partnering with those cheap but good chinese smartphone manufacturers to make their own flagship smartphone with dedicated games?
The latter idea sounds the most exciting and I hope they do that... don't know how their handheld and smartphone will coexist happily without them competing directly with each other though.

Honestly, I don't think they need a next big thing. If their next console launches in 2016, is more powerful and just as easy to code for as the competition, and is up-to-date when it comes to online connectivity, they'll have a hit on their hands. That's want people want from them. A modern Nintendo experience, with a console that isn't running on ancient tech. I mean, a lot of Wii U games run at 720p | 60FPS, if they can do that with the tiny amount of power they have with the Wii U, imagine what they could do with a modern system.

And well, they're going to print money if they make a Pokemon game for smart phones.

They're also working on QoL products that aren't related to gaming, although not much has been announced about that.

They mention as well that they're working with DeNa to build a online membership service that is accessible from PC, Wii U, NX, 3DS and smart phones. That's already one step in the right direction. It's meant to launch this year. I honestly don't know who at Nintendo thought that it would be a good idea to lock digital downloads to the individual console, and not to an account like everyone else does.

Yea I don't think they need the next big thing, why I said that was because of this part of the announcement "developing a dedicated game platform with a brand new concept under the development", So it seems they are not just making a normal working next gen console, seems like there will be some new big feature that the console will be based around.
