Nintendo's problems are bad for the entire industry

Nintendo’s problems aren’t just a problem for Nintendo, according to Sony executive Fergal Gara. The industry at large could see a ripple effect from the company’s recent poor financial performance.

“We need to bring maybe more family-friendly, more casual experiences into the market,” said Gara in a recent interview. I think there’s a big market segment there that we should take the challenge to engage and I see lots of potential to do that.”

Gara says that unless companies like Sony take the challenge to tap into that younger consumer group, the decline of Nintendo could be determental to the industry as a whole.

Nintendo’s highly publicized losses and downward projections shocked the games industry in January. The company cut its projected sales for the Wii U, and even started wading into the possibilities of a new business model going forward.

What are your thoughts?

So they don't want Nintendo to fail because then they'd have to try and cater to that family-friendly market? Sounds like a good way to increase your revenue to me.

I think what he means is a lot of people started with nintendo when they were younger and then as they got older moved on to Xbox and playstation.

Exactly... Nintendo is the perfect kids console... Parents that dont want their kids playing the shootem up's and pg rated things like GTA will lean towards the child friendly Mario... This gets the kids loving the gaming, and when they get bigger they want the more mature games, and PS and X-Box want the young adults that have the cash to spend...
