A Soweto man has been unable to lay criminal charges against his former girlfriend for allegedly trying to infect him with HIV, it was reported on Monday.

The 27-year-old man tried to open a case at the Dobsonville police station, but was told he could bring only a civil suit because there was no law to support a criminal case, the Sowetan reported.

So what does attempted murder mean? How's this different from poisoning someone and leaving the person maimed for life?
