It looks like gamers really are alone in No Man's Sky.

Wasn't this expected though? I'm pretty sure they said it's a single player game with multiplayer elements. I may be wrong though.

Seems to me the day one patch removed multiplayer, which will allow them to add that in a paid DLC later... #conspiracytheory

uhm - OK thats news to me. I was under the impression that players are in the same universe but just unlikely to meet each-other given the scale.

That is exactly the case. Murray clarified later on twitter that the "seeing each other" portion was spun down for launch, as the launch figures exceeded their expectations. Think of not seeing each other as NMS's error 13.
