No more skyrim

Thread Killer Mk VIII
Skyrim is finished. Done. Bethesda is moving on to greener pastures.

Skyrim has been a labor of love for us since we started designing it in 2006. We never imagined it would become the phenomenon it has. And that is because of you, the fans. It was all of you who made it a success. We can’t thank you enough for embracing the game, spreading the word, and making it your own.

For the last year and a half we’ve been working on new content for Skyrim; from the game updates, Creation Kit, Steam Workshop, Kinect support, to DLCs. Parts of our team have also been in pre-production on our next major project, and that game is at the point where it requires the studio’s full attention to make it our biggest and best work yet.

Even though we’re moving on, we’ll still have minor updates to Skyrim as needed. We’ve invested so much of ourselves into Skyrim and will never truly say goodbye to it.

We loved hearing your stories, your in-game triumphs, and your suggestions. One thing stuck out to us through those emails, letters, and postings. And that is – video games matter. They’re as important to you as they are to us. It’s not just about entertainment, it’s about your time. And you chose to spend it with our game.

Thank you again for all your support. We hope you stay engaged in the gaming community here and elsewhere. Keep spreading the word. Games are the world’s best entertainment because they can do what other forms cannot – fill you with the wonder of exploration and the pride of accomplishment. We look forward to sharing our next adventure with you.

Until next time,

Bethesda Game Studios

I get the feeling the DLC didn't sell too well, hence the abrupt change from "BIGGEST, BEST DLC FOR ANY OF OUR GAMES EVER!" to, "Here's two small ones and one decently-sized one, now STFU AND ENJOY!"

Oh well.

Keen to see what Bethesda do next. Still just wish they'd get better writers and make their games more deep and meaningful character-, choice- and story-wise.

They're likely moving on to Fallout 4. Where they'll once again create a game as wide as the ocean but as deep as a puddle.

I hate them for their quantity over quality approach to games.

I felt Fallout: New Vegas was pretty darn good, maybe even better than Skyrim. They are one of my favourite companies because of the games they create. Yes they have their flaws but they really appeal to me.

Fallout New Vegas was good because it wasn't developed by Bethesda. It was developed by Obsidian and published by Bethesda.

Ah I didn't know that! Interesting. But even so, Skyrim is a brilliant game, and as for Morrowind, that's on my list of best games ever made. And Fallout 3 while not as good as New Vegas in my opinion is damn excellent!

You can't really have a world as massive as Skyrim and expect to have it filled with in depth stories. But since Skyrim is so successful, and since adequate game engines are becoming less expensive, I'm sure they'll be able to build bigger and more in depth worlds over time.

Yet Fallout New Vegas did exactly that. It had depth to it that Skyrim could just as easily have mimicked. NV had multiple paths through quests, a proper faction and reputation system, proper choice and consequence, chains of quests spanning mini storylines with multiple choices and ways to finish it. And then Skyrim released, which was basically a static world filled with a bunch of kill and fetch quests with almost no consequences to the incredibly limited amount of choice you were given. No deep RPG elements, no far-reaching consequences to your actions, no change brought about by your actions, nothing.

Skyrim is essentially an action game plopped into an open world, and that's why it's my most disappointing game of 2011. It's not necessarily a bad game, but there's nothing exceptional about it.

I hold it up as one of the examples of what's wrong with the AAA gaming industry. Giant budget, giant marketing campaigns, critical acclaim, mediocre games.

Have I told you lately that I love you?

I got bored with skyrim, didn't even finish the main quest. I keep telling myself I must but never get round to it.

It's weird but I have no desire to explore like I did in the other games. I think it's partly has to do with the fact that I'm no longer required to run and jump around like a loon to level my athletics and acrobatics. I actually used to enjoy doing that.

Now I have no reason to run anywhere so I usually just fast travel. I try not to use it but even though the land looks nice it's seems very boring, not nearly enough random encounters. But yeah I may just be missing them cause I'm fast traveling everywhere.

Fast travel was a real knock to the series.

In Morrowind you had to use Silt Striders to get around and that was awesome as it really added to the immersion and you couldn't just zoom to the nearest bandit camp.
