For an affordable soundcard, I'd recommend the Scarlett 2i2. Really great performance and at a great price as well.
For monitors, maybe take a look at the KRK Rokit 5s? Also got some great performance at a great price. I've used the KRK 6s and loved them. The nice thing with the KRK 5s is that they aren't big at all. Nice and compact if space is an issue.

Well man, since you're planning to upgrade anyway; you might as well just buy a new MOBO that comes with all the extra sound peripherals included

For what it's worth, I've had the Z506 for 6 months or so now. Really loud. Excellent clarity. Good bass for the sub size. 5.1 works well in gaming if the speakers are positioned correctly, yet the configuration software is a bit suspect imo as I can't really get the acoustics exactly how I want it. RCA cables are great, but quite thick and may take some hard work to conceal properly. They also don't detach at the speaker end. I would like to just unplug the speakers and dust them off outside, but this is not possible.
But I did get them for R599, so I am extremely happy with them.

I'm actually thinking of buying an 11" Macbook with those KRK 5s for audio production. I love using Logic Pro X over anything else.

Lol, I also got them at that price on sale from HiFi crop. A good program to help you out is to use THXStudio to sort out your acoustics, I use that and get perfect sound at most angles.
