Wow, so I guess the rumours of crappy yields are true!

So after the news of this got out, Nvidia used their Marketing Department, I mean Fuad, I mean Fudzilla :

Fermi Tesla board is a mock-up

Nvidia confirms

Fermi that was running PhysX at Jensen's GTC keynote was real and the one that we all took pictures of was a mock-up. The real engineering sample card is full of wires, looks like an octopus of modules and wires and top man of Nvidia didn't want to give that thing to Jensen. This was confirmed today by top Nvidia VP president class chap but the same person did confirmed that the card is real and that it does exist.

Charlie was surely right about this one here. The card that Jensen showed and we all pictured is not a working sample. Some key people at Nvidia have promised to show us the picture of the real one. Stay tuned.

I'm... Horrified. I've always been a Nvidia supporter because they've always produced high quality, top performance cards that have satisfied me to the point where I keep coming back, but now... I seriously don't know.

I'm contemplating buying myself a 5870 when it's available now because of this but I think I'll wait for Nvidia's press release and see if they will apologise or deny it before I make my move.

I am seriously appalled though. Bad move, Nvidia, baaad move.

interweb dramatics unite; so the card on display was an imagination of the end product who haven't done this on a presentation before...

I agree. It's a bit bizarre announcing something which they can't even demonstrate, but it's not to say they cannot make it or that they don't plan to put (obviously a working version :D) it into production at some point.

Perhaps I simply just don't get what the fuss is about? :o

I'm not impressed with the lie they told. If they didn't have something to show they could have avoided this enormous internet freak out and just came with the information they had and told everybody that they will continue working even harder to produce what they think will be an amazing card.

Not hacksaw another card to size and screw it all together and say that they have it right here, that's just plain wrong.

should we burn down sony as well for not having the real deal at CES* ?

*The Playstation 3 on display was just conceptual, not real hardware

And did they hacksaw up a piece of wood and carve the name "Playstation" into it and say "This is the real thing!" No, they worked on, and designed a concept model and made sure people knew that it was still a work in progress, and that it could still change. What did Nvidia do? They took pieces of old cards, cut them down to size and screwed it all together and said "This is it!" Fucking ridiculous in my opinion.

I'm completely on Necuno's side with this.

To requote what OP quoted:

Fermi that was running PhysX at Jensen's GTC keynote was real and the one that we all took pictures of was a mock-up.

So there's a real one, it's more than just a prototype, plans are in the works to begin production and what people took pictures of was nothing more than a plastic demo model (not unlike the hundreds of fake cellphones lining most cellular stores' shelves). So, really, I can't fathom the problem.

The only possible problem I can see is that photographers and journalists who were there went off to write articles about how z0mg it looked and then later found out they had been tricked and thus their egos were crushed.

Beyond that, I still don't understand the problem.

It's like taking pics of Pamela Anderson's boobs (let's pretend for a moment that they're worth looking at in the first place), great on the outside, but fake on the inside. You're flaunting an idea with the demo, a "tease" not saying "here it is, come feel it up and make sure it's the real thing."

If ATi did the same thing, it would be the same story - it just doesn't matter, it's a marketing tactic, after all.

Would it've been so z0mg awesome if it was the real deal those journos took pics of? Sure, we would've had a more realistic idea of what the card will actually look like in production, but that's, what I assume to be, their production concept, which up until "Zomg! It's fake" was the talk of the town.

So.... meh... I really couldn't be bothered with this rhetoric. If there's a problem with the card, if they stole ATi's architecture or something ethically, morally or criminally wrong, I might care. But for something so utterly feeble? Pfff... I'm sure there are better things to worry about :p

If people complain about this then they must hate ALL motor vehicle companies. Prototyping, concepting and mock-ups are standards used by all motor companies.

Will the card look like the mock-up at the end of the day? More than likely.

Will the card perform the same as the engineering sample? More than likely.

Basically, they showed you what the card will look like and what the performance would be like......... WTF is the problem?

Agreed with Necuno...... interweb dramatics at it's best.....

The problem is that, Nvidia tried to pass it off as the real deal.
When word got out, they admitted it was a "mock-up".

So why didn't they just say it was a "mock-up" in the first place?
Maybe because they were trying to rain on ATI's HD5800 release, and that's the only reason why.

I understand the use of Concept Models and designs, but seriously, those mostly apply to products that you will PHYSICALLY see when its being used, hence the Concept Cars, and the PS3? It looks 90% the same as that concept model, and its in plain sight when you use it.

But a "Concept" for a graphics card?
No way, they were just trying to dispell Rumours (which in light of this now seem very real) that they were having major problems with their "Fermi" graphics cards.

...........+1.........

I prefure ATI, Compiared to my trusty Radion 9250 (RIP), All the Nvidia cards Iv had Have givin me crap (2 Geforce MX440s, A GF5700, A GF6200 and now Im waiting for my current 6200 to die....)

Woot a fake!

Remembering when 8000 series was release, there was a similar scandal, then when the card arrived, the techy/entusiasts were floored by it's performace....

Marketing and smoke screens, same ol same ol. Wait till the card is released, I'm thinkin it's gonna be a MONSTER. Just lol @ the usual fan-fare and be done with it IMHO.

I can top this...I owned a top of the line Nvidia card (can't remember the model now damnit), 2 weeks later Nvidia pulled ALL details of the card and basically denied its existance. How's that for after sales support :) I dunno chaps, Nvidia is an a lot of trouble latelly and ATI/AMD are making a lot of progress. It may be the end of the green-monster as we know it.
