So what happens when you make something, and the only way to get people to buy it, is to sell it for less than it costs you to manufacture it? (ie. You Losing money.)

You STOP making it.

Semi-Accurate - Nvidia kills GTX285, GTX275, GTX260, abandons the mid and high end market

Fudzilla - Nvidia partners discontinued GTX285 and GTX275...

Well, the good thing for Nvidia is that it will force buyers to go the GT300 route when looking to buy a new GFX card at the end of this year.
(That's if they even get it released by then.)

Ok well the new high end ATI cards are not bad, no I am not an ATI fan but gotta look at facts, but if the new Nvidia cards come out and are some were along 4000-4500 i will definitely get that.

First reported last week by Charlie Demerjian of SemiAccurate that Nvidia were killing the GTX 200 series, the news created quite an uproar in the hardware community. Ken Brown, Nvidia PR, replied by saying "There is no truth in this", the next day.

A week before that, AIB partners complained of shortages in 55nm graphics boards, and there is no doubt, that alongside all the rumours remains the fact that availability for the GTX 200 series has been slowly deteriorating.

In the latest twist to the tale, today, Fudzilla reports that it is not Nvidia, but its partners which are discontinuing the GTX 200 series.

We are still, at the very least, two and some months away from Fermi/GF100. So why would Nvidia kill any competition in the performance, high-end segment? Simply, they can't afford to compete with AMD's new 5000 generation products, which are much cheaper to make. Consider the GTX 260-216, currently priced at $170. Its new competitor will be the HD 5770, retailing at $159. Nvidia, with its 480mm2 die, 448-bit memory interface full length PCB and expensive cooler simply can't afford to compete with a mainstream 180mm2, 128-bit product, which costs a fraction to produce, at the same price, not to mention the lack of a DX11 feature set. This has led to Nvidia's partners demanding a price cut for the components, but Nvidia have refused - as they don't want to lose profitability on it's GTX 200 parts, which are rather expensive to manufacture.

So, instead of cutting prices and losing money to remain competitive, Nvidia and its partners are apparently simply clearing their stocks and concentrating on the Fermi launch. While Fudzilla cites a "lack of availability", it is clear Nvidia is not interested in selling GT200b chips at a lower price. Therefore, GTX 260, GTX 275 and GTX 285 will be off the shelves. Surely, the GTX 295 will follow, especially once Hemlock is here. It is poor value for money even at this point, anyway, though this could be said of the entire GTX 200 line in competition with the HD 5700/5800 series.

This leaves AMD without competition in the >$250 till GF100 hits stores, which is earliest in December. Below that, the HD 5700 remain unchallenged well into Q1 2010.

We hope Nvidia can get their heads down and make up for lost time with a solid Fermi family of GPUs.

well, to be fair, Charlie Demerjian is a hardcore anti-nvidia doom prophet.

a lot of the stuff he writes turns out to be crap.

Subversion, you don't seem to read very well, I posted another source (Fudzilla) and Maplassie posted the VR-zone article. Everything that SemiAccurate have reported has turned out to be true. So Charlie's probably turned over a new leaf, or he's just gotten better sources.

Sad news from nvidia, lets hope they dont go bust... Most games are developed on the quadro cards and would be sad if everyone wasforce to buy ATI GPUs i personaly dont like them and they give me issues always. If Nvidia left the market, i just move over to console completely.

would actually be interresting if Ati Would buy Nvidia off, and this however opens the market up for intel to play a role aswell.

but at this moment amd/ati owns the market at this moment.

that would be bad as there would be less compution

Lol, Charlie for President!
Nothing wrong with Nvidia, cept their marketing department, their Head man, their poor quality materials, their lack of support for.... wait a minute what am I saying - Nvidia is pure gold!

I would said a few years back but they dropping the ball lately, I am not sure whats happening but they don't seem to bring out killer products

Something doesnt seem right why would they kill there new line and still release new lower range cards something is up with nVidia, they upto something....

they should've thought of this in the first place. u can't make money by screwing yourself over. they just have to deal with it or go bankrupt. either way doesn't bother me

Anyway, its basically like this: Nvidia Cant compete with the HD5800 Series because their GTX200 series costs too much to make. So they can't drop their prices (because they would incur a Loss) and they can't keep making something that won't sell. So they stopped making the High-end Stuff.

They do intend to launch the GT300 by the year's end, and by that time, you can probably expect an AMD price cut.
