Nvidia or ATI?

ATI makes great value GPU's. nVidia is all about performance and it seems very overpriced for what you get. Based on performance: nVidia GTX 295 is the absolute best card, GTX 280 being the best single card. Based on value: ATI HD 4800 series. Best value for money and incredible gaming expierences!

ATI has the best value for money option on the HD4850 right now. If you want crazy performance go for the HD4870 or the X2 option.

i have both nv and ati.

imho nv is better because it just works- ati definitly have more issues, but the 48xx is a great range.

I agree, the drivers need some looking in to, but Nvidia drivers aren't all that as well. At least there is a new driver each month for the ATI cards, the same can't be said for Nvidia.

I disagree. Taking from the prices at prophecy.co.za and the results from tomshardware with my rules:

Any game producing under 30fps for both is deemed "unplayable" at the resolution, and neither scores:
Total tests (via tomshardware): 67
Performed better by 9800GTX+ : 22
Performed better by 4870: 36
Unplayable: 9

Total Frames per second 9800GTX+ : 34172.8
Total Frames per second 4870 : 35794.1
This gives the 4870 a ~5% better than 9800GTX+

Power Consumption of the 9800GTX: 99w
Power consumption of the 4870: 117w

Price for the 9800GTX+ (was the evga, since then it's been removed, inno3d is cheaper though): R2467
Price for the 4870 (cheapest): R3242
This makes the 4870 ~31% more expensive.

Cost wise, 31% increase in price for a 5% increase shows that the 9800GTX+ is better value for money.

Having said that, the 4870 does outperform the 9800GTX+ at higher resolutions (1920x1200) but for lower resolutions the 9800GTX+ tends to do better. The fact that the GTX+ uses less power than the 4870 is a minor selling point to those of use who have to pay the power bills.

Cost is always an issue, if it wasn't we'd all be running tri-SLI 295's. Ultimately I opted for the 9800GTX+ (evga) because it was cheaper, and in the long run will save me a few cents on the power bill too and my screen cant handle those higher resolutions where the 4870 is better anyway.

ATi all the way! 4870x2 will kick anything from nVidia! (although I am a bit sceptical about the new 212...)

I got myself a 4850 and love it. After years of using Nvidia cards the pricing and performance of the 4850 definitely won me over and I am now saving so that I can add another one and get some Crossfire love going. My one concern with the card is that it was running very hot without any overclocking done to it (up around 90 degrees), I bought an aftermarket cooler and it now purs at a nice cool 35 degrees :)

I also have the 4850 and had the same problem.
I wanted to try rivtuner and other solution but the newer ati drivers have the ability to set your Fan Speed in the CCC in overdrive.
Glad your solution worked but I was too poor to buy something like that.

Yeah, I bought the new fan just before they released the new drivers. I was a little peeved to say the least. Now I can't adjust the fan speed at all, and the new fan (as shiny and blue as it is) is a little loud for my liking... Did you find that the new drivers helped at all?

I'm a NVidia fan for life BTW! :)

That's great dude. I hope that's working out for you. Do you also only support soccer teams that always win? I personally hope to see Nvidia burn to the ground. Everytime I see that "The way it's meant to be played" video I hurl chunks of half-congealed blood and hair all over my shoes. Sometimes there's poo in there too... I don't quite understand the physiology of it, but it happens

DJ, you're more than welcome to buy whatever you want and I'll buy whatever I want.

I've just only ever seen issues with ATI - friends buy ATI who have bought NVidia and they regret it.

Actually, 2 have wised up and taken the ATI's back and swopped them for Nvidia cards (they buy directly from suppliers and exploited the return period)

So ya... whatever ;)

Hehe, fair enough. I was just giving you crap because I'm at work and grumpy and I should be working instead of sitting here typing to you :) And I will always defend the underdog. It's just my way
