Oculus Rift anyone?

Hi,

Anyone has one? How's the experience so far? What are the PC requirements to run smoothly? What controller do you use?

It's getting cheaper and cheaper to get the Dev Kit 2 ($350). Thinking of getting one but want to know if it's worth?

TIA

I've been eyeing it but I just can't justify spending that kind of money to basically test out the product. I'll wait for the consumer versions and decent quality game support before jumping into that, even though I'm quite excited for VR.

I'm also waiting for the consumer version and also to see if maybe its competition will be better. The consumer version will already be a lot better than the Dev Kit 2 so I'd say rather wait.

Iv got a mate who has one and he says he has barely touched it... I think its a bit silly to get a Dev kit... Wait until there are proper games out, and proper support etc... Why would you want to struggle with a Dev kit, and pay the same price, if not more, for something that isnt quite on par with what the final product will be...

When will these units be available to the public anyway?

I saw there's some dev units available on gumtree, last time I checked, but it's kinda useless if you are not a developer

On top, I would prefer to buy something from Valve than Facebook.

I watched an in depth video on this and the technology is very advanced. So much so that, I don't see it becoming mainstream. Firstly, Valve doesn't want to do develop it further. They did the R&D and now they offering it whomever to further create and develop. Secondly, the "advanced technology" part means it is never going to be cheap. Just Youtube it and you will see what I mean. It's in a totally different league with regards to precision that it will probably only make economic sense for business use.

I hope I'm wrong and the hardware becomes cheap but I don't see it happening. Not in the near future.

Not really keen on the Oculus but apparently the HTC Vive thing is going to retail around 450 GBP, which is roughly R10 000...not exactly cheap lol

Well fark, Guess I'll skip for now.. the rand is doing terrible against the Dollar and Pound anyway

Yip and I doubt it's going to get better any time soon.
I'm super amped for VR, I just don't think I can get myself to spend 10k on a vr headset.

Whew, it's going to cost a fortune to get VR. I will have to buy a new pc which will put be back R20 000 and then to get the Rift and get it here will probably cost R6000 minimum if I have to guess.

It's pretty crazy. :(

ISecondly, the "advanced technology" part means it is never going to be cheap.

How can you even say that? There isn't one person who is commenting on this site who isn't using something that was at some point in time "advanced technology". its the nature of technology, it will become cheap.

It probably won't. Like consoles, it will likely maintain its price point for years to come. There's a difference between a peripheral and hardware. A graphics card becomes cheaper over time because it is constantly being surpassed by new hardware. By the time your GPU is 2 years old, there will likely be 10 new ones on the market that are better.

The peripheral market is entirely different market environment. If we're to see significant price reductions then it likely won't be in the next 5 years.
