You can start doing strike playlists to get rare gear to help increase your light level. Try an do the weekly strike as well for the strange coins. Strange Coins can get you exotic gear to help increase your light level. Xur sells 1 piece of exotic armor per class every weekend starting at Fridays 11am.

Start playing Strike playlists and POE 28 when you are high enough level. Getting rare blue gear to level up is fairly easy. Especially if you play Crucible a lot. There are also a lot more changes to get Legendary weapon drops from Crucible and Strikes and even more so in POE. I get a legendary weapon or piece of armor ever 5 strikes/POEs/Crucible matches.
 
Really considering getting the new DLC, looks impressive!

[MENTION=4071]BeoTeK[/MENTION] no not yet man. First wanted to play the game as much as possible to see if i would enjoy the grind. But i think i am close to buying it. I see the season pass does not include the taken king, so that is a bit of a bummer. But i think i will be purchasing it.

Of course yes. But the added content is worth it in my opinion, if you're the sort to spend 10's or even 100's of hours in this style of game.
Look at getting the Legendary Edition which includes the all previous DLC along with The Taken King and some extra stuff (even though it comes with base Destiny which you own, I think it's better bang for buck given your current situation).

Vault of Glass on normal is level 26, 30 on hard mode. Crota's End is level 30 on normal and mostly 32 on hard mode, however Crota himself is 33 on hard mode.

I would suggest looking at sites like www.planetdestiny.com for information on everything you need. They have a massive database with all of the weapons and armor available. Including info on events and regular articles about interesting stuff. They also do weapon reviews and stuff like that. Their looking for group app works great for finding raid groups, you just join in and create parties on their app, then add the people on your console.

Start off with doing strike playlist. The dragon playlist will get you rare gear and at the very least a few legendaries. Take part in the events as well, you can unlock good gear in the Iron Banner this week (just remember that the Iron banner shader, emblem and class item gives 10% increase to reputation gain, each, so equip them before playing). If you reach lvl 28 then do some Prison of Elders matches on 28 while you do strikes. Get in on the weekly heroics and get yourself to lvl 32. Once you hit 32 the raids will be a lot easier and you can get friends to help you with the weekly Nightfall, for the chance of some great gear. For lvl 32 you need 4 pieces of armour with 36 light. All the stock gear, including the vanguard and crucible gear offers 36 light, so does the Iron Banner stuff.

At level 32 the game offers a lot more to do. You can start doing the tougher Prison of Elder matches as well, get armor cores and buy the light 42 gear from Variks.

But yeah, stick with strike playlists first, the lvl 28 dragon one, and do pvp, both give you marks and complete bounties while you do them. In a few weeks you will have enough marks for a full set of legendary armor and at least level 2 in both vanguard and crucible.

Joining a faction could also help get you gear slightly faster, but just remember you have to play crucible then to get marks for new gear.
 
Was freakin up till 2am on this bladdy thing!

Managed to get some great grear and up to lvl 31. I'm just hoping Xur has a Titan classed exotic helm. Got some sweet weapons, finally got Ice Breaker and still trying to lvl my Hawkmoon, which I'm loving! :D

Did most of the resets, Heroic Story, Nightfall and all the bounties. Crota is a fucking boss!
 
Also managed to max out my Striker Titan, now wanna do the Defender subclass as well. Also plan on doing some leveling with my Hunter, which is around lvl 13.

Wondering if I should get that Titan Helm from Xur as well. I'm still rolling a rare helm, the rest is legendary. Or should I just wait to see of I RNG a decent helm or grind Vanguard to get one.
 
Managed to get to level 23 now. Really wish i could find players for strikes to get the vanguard marks up to buy some new shit.

I've also been wanting to get back into this for a while now. Borrowing a friend's copy at the moment to see if I should buy it again, but I don't have PS + at the moment so I can't to crucible or strike missions. Will probably just replay some of the missions on harder difficulties or maybe level up another class.
