I'm surprised BeoTek hasn't already posted this, but it looks like 1.2 (wings update) has been released. My download is estimated to be completed in 3 days, it's crawling at 0.01Mbps.

Tried downloading last night, but it kept giving me some kind of error each time the download started. I went to bed before fixing it, so I will have a look at it again tonight.

Yeah, I been at a loss with only having onboard graphics now, and I've resulted in sitting in the corner in the fetal position rocking back and forth.

What happened to your GPU? Clearly I missed something

Just decided to upgrade. Sold the 6yr old one but can only [-]hopefully[/-] afford the 970 end of the month.

Ah oky, I know you were planning on upgrading but didn't realize you had sold your old one already.

I'm sure Solitaire runs just fine with onboard graphics :3
Hope everything works out and you can afford the new card at the end of the month.

I'm still trying to update, just saw this on the elite dangerous refunds group.

And still the metacritic user score falls, I see. Now down to 6.6.

One reason being that fanboys are revising their scores:

This is my second review of Elite: Dangerous. At the launch of the game I gave it a 10. This was based on, at the time a very smooth launch, an enjoyable beta period and to counter the 0 reviews it was unfairly getting due to the the whole offline debatable.
It's now over 2 months since the launch of the game and I've come back to update my review and I've decided to give it a 6.
When David Braben was interviewed up to the launch of the game, he kept using the analogy of a house being built and that they were in the final stages of all the furniture being put in - as much as a month before release. This made many feel that from Gamma to launch there would be a lot of new stuff - however in the end what was released was little more than what we had seen at the end of Beta.
What was added was shallow and quite frankly buggy. What has been confirmed is that the background simulation that Frontier told us was going to be amazing, and why offline needed to be removed, is actually nothing more than some simple (and broken) functionality - the real game has to be injected on an event-by-event basis by the development team.
Basically Frontier are the wizard behind the curtain, and they keep telling us to try ignore it - but you can't ignore the fact they just pull leavers and knobs to make the whole thing work.
The GalNet news items are shoddily written with little real enjoyable narrative, stories that go nowhere and very little quality or spell checking - as if someone let the dyslexic intern loose on the production CMS and isn't checking what they put out.
Exploration is nothing like what it was touted to be - we were told it would be exciting, that there would be lots to find in the galaxy. Many of us imagined it would be like Skyrim in Space - where we would stumble on adventures. Sadly it's nothing more than Jump, Scan system with 1 button, find only the interesting worlds, point your ship at them for 30 seconds. Rinse and repeat and then sell the data.
While the addition of "First discovered" tag on systems is a nice touch, it's not enough to hide the fact the game is very shallow.
The latest addition of community goals seems like a rather slap-dash add on to the game to create some content but less than 5000 players took part and achieved no where near all the goals. The ones who did complained of any lack of real gameplay (granted not all players). What it did create was some conflict which saw people enjoying PvP but mostly it pushed risk-adverse players into private or solo mode.
On the whole solo mode thing, my personal opinion is that it is what will completely ruin the game. People say they don't want another Eve-type game. Well not only will they not get that, but they also won't get a multiplayer game with any players in it.
Overall when I was back in Beta 1, the game felt epic even though it was limited to a handful of systems. When they opened up the bubble it felt even grander. When they opened up the galaxy everything felt like it collapsed in on itself and the true game was revealed to be very little content.
Frontier have committed themselves to new content patches and I will continue to watch this game change and grow over time but I don't feel confident that the captain at the helm of this ship sees the icebergs ahead.

Oh and on the court action front... Frontier decided to settle out of court and paid the remaining funds as well as the 25 pounds court fee.
They refunded the 15 pound outstanding plus the 25 pounds court costs incurred so far for beginning the action. Pretty rapid really...

But can you fly unassisted?

I'm just curious to know if a HOTAS makes this easier or possible.

I'm just curious to know if a HOTAS makes this easier or possible.

I do the odd unassisted maneuver, like doing a 90 degree flip to shoot the guy behind me or when coming in to dock.

I think it makes it easier, but not easy. I still prefer to fly assisted most of the time.

Braben: No. The issue with the game is… In my experience, there’s always something more you want to do with the game. If you’re a perfectionist, it’s never perfect. But having said that, we released a game that was a complete game.

LOL.

Braben: People have very high expectations and that’s fair. And that’s part down to the fact we raised those expectations. But I think we have been delivering on them. And I am proud actually, even looking at what we said during the Kickstarter, we have done very close to what we said we would do. Overall. In terms of people, I think most people are delighted. They’re afraid of saying, ‘oh yes’, because then we might stop. I think that’s at the back of their mind.

Another LOL.

Frontier adds Pratchett's Disc starport to Elite: Dangerous

Elite: Dangerous developer Frontier has added a new starport to the space game that celebrates the life of Terry Pratchett.

A screenshot showing Pratchett's Disc starport.
Last week Sir Terry died aged 66 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.

Many in the gaming community took to social networks to express their sadness at Pratchett's passing, and how much his work had meant to them. Now, Frontier has immortalised the acclaimed author of the Discworld fantasy series with a starport set within the Elite: Dangerous universe.

Elite: Dangerous' servers went down today as update 1.2.05 was applied to the game. Amid the patch notes was the following:

Added Pratchett's Disc starport.
We got in touch with Frontier to find out more, and to obtain the screenshot, above.

"At Frontier we have a great many Pratchett fans on staff and we were all saddened to learn of his passing," executive producer Michael Brookes told Eurogamer.

"The sentiment was reflected by our community so we felt it would be right to remember him in Elite: Dangerous

"For me personally, Terry Pratchett was one of very few authors whose books I could buy without needing to read a review or even ask what the story was about. His talent for social commentary, humour, unforgettable characters and vivid worlds not only provided joy as a reader, but inspiration as a writer."

Elite: Dangerous just made one player $15,000 richer

When Elite: Dangerous launched just three months ago it also announced a contest worth a total of 13,000 British pounds, including a single 10,000 pound grand prize. Over the weekend, Frontier Developments CEO David Braben finally announced the winners on YouTube, and the results are remarkable.

The Race To Elite contest featured four categories, three of which awarded 1,000 pounds, or around $1,500, to the first three players to reach Elite rank in combat, trade and exploration. The grand prize went to the first player to reach Elite rank in all three categories, and had a payout of 10,000 pounds, or the equivalent of $15,000.

The exploration award was won by a player known as Commander Tequila, who travelled over 190,000 light years to survey 7,967 unique star systems. Commander Lordkee took home the $1,500 prize for trade, moving more than 834,353 metric tons of cargo over 1,046 hours of total game time. Commander Fromtonrouge was the winner in the combat category, bringing down 8,563 ships since Elite launched.

The grand prize went to Commander Onepercent, who visited a stunning 10,342 unique star systems, tallied up 9,032 kills, traded 835,410 metric tons of cargo (including 2,000 metric tons on the black market) and took 1,029 in-game hours to do it.

Elite was recently announced for the Xbox One. By the time it launches on the console there will still be plenty of universe left to explore. Frontier has crunched the numbers and said that, at the current rate of player exploration, the game's 400 billion unique star systems will take around 150,000 years to explore in-game. Polygon had some stick time before the game went live, and you can see our video below.

Hi everyone,

Starting at 5PM GMT today, you'll find Nvidia GeForce Titan Black Prototypes in stock at one mystery starport in Elite: Dangerous' galaxy. The Titan Blacks are available in unlimited supply, but only the first five players to retrieve and sell a canister of the Titan Black prototypes to Godel Ring in the Ededleen system will be rewarded with a real Titan Black, with an RRP of £899.

To be eligible to win one of the five cards, CMDRs taking part in this competition must remain in Open Play from the moment they obtain the Titan Black, to after they have sold it at Godel Ring.

Only one prize can be claimed per person. Claimants will be verified by Frontier Developments, and the decision will be final. To claim your prize, please email [email protected] with your Commander name in the subject line along with the words 'I sold an Nvidia Titan Black'. The winners will be judged based upon the order when the Titan Black Prototypes were sold at Godel Ring, not when the emails were received. We will make people aware on our social media channels, and the forum, once the first five canisters have been successfully delivered and verified. This is available to players worldwide.
-----------------------------------------

Here’s the original post as seen on Galnet:

‘The NVIDIA labs, in association with Reynhardt IntelliSys, are pleased to announce that prototypes of the GeForce GTX Titan Black graphics card are now available for purchase from one exclusive outlet’. A masterpiece of engineering, the NVIDIA Geforce GTX Titan Black represents the cutting edge of display technology. It balances a sleek design with uncompromising performance and unparalleled processing power, making the Titan Black one of the most desirable display modules in the entire galaxy.

To celebrate the pre-release of the new module, NVIDIA are offering 5 lucky pilots the opportunity to win a commercial grade GTX Titan Black. Winning the competition couldn’t be simpler. The first 5 pilots to sell a canister of NVIDIA GeForce GTX Titan Black Prototypes back to NVIDIA HQ aboard Godel Ring will be rewarded with a commercial model as soon as they become available. The only problem is NVIDIA isn’t saying where the prototypes are being sold. Happy hunting Commanders.

Entrants must have transported the prototypes under the Pilots Federation rules of 'open play' to be eligible to win.’

As the Galnet post says, Happy Hunting!
