Ok so I'm going to be a Telkom customer again...

I'm moving into my own place again and dreading the thought of having to get helkom to install a phone line there for internet. Few questions though, how long do they take these days to go about this? Any idea what insane amount they charge for it? Would phone them and ask but I don't feel like sitting in the queue for an hour. Last time (2 years ago) I waited around 5 weeks for them to get to my house..

Also, what's the best (cheapest) way to go for internet these days? Looking for 386kb/sec 3gb account for now, tight budget and all. At the moment I'm leaning towards getting to DoBroadband 2 option thing.

2weeks - 4months

Make sure the line is installed with ADSL capabilities before you go ahead with the DoBroadband2 package, otherwise they start charging you for ADSL you can't use

bugger twat-com, just get I-burst or neo-tel, it's faster, cheaper, more robust, and I swear there run by Igor Kolashnokov.
 
Sometimes you get lucky like i did when we had our line installed it only took 3 weeks, i suppose it also depends if your exchange is dsl ready and have all the needed hardware, not to mention if there are any spare or open DSL ports to connect you to. Telkom is like playing a mini roulette table :)
 
I applied for a telephone line and DSL the Wednessday afternoon, and was online Friday afternoon :D

Neotel has been really nice with me. Supposedly your line speed is 4.5mbps when using the NeoFlex Data..I'm using the 5gb...the only complaint I have so far, is stormy nights. When it's raining outside, your connection is HORRIBLE! Tried to play DoTA last night....so bad I kept getting dropped...hope I don't have any VP's today :p

But otherwise, it's been great. Plus, I'm moving to Cape Town now. And I can simply plug in my device once there, and continue surfing the web...FTW!

Im in the same boat as you bro. Also moving into a new place and have to get telkom to pull in a line. I went and got some paper work from my local Telkom store. You looking at about R170 something for a decent call package and R300odd for 512kb Line. As i already have an ISP i wont go DoBroadband. Im moving in Dec and im going to get this app in before November so it should be in when i move in.

Also if your looking for a cheap ISP try out afrihost their ADSL Gold option, 3GB cap is only R90 a month. Im on the 10GB power plan and i pay R290. Which, for 10GB is a pretty awesome deal. Ill see if i can find the paperwork, my fiance has it, and ill let you know the exact prices.

Awesome, cheers. I will be using the line purely for internet purposes, so I'm trying to crunch the numbers here. I'm looking at spending around R400 a month on it, hopefully I can get a decent package for that. Afrihost does have some nice prices, I'll check it out.

[EDIT] One thing that worries me a bit though is that those prices are on a "limited offer" basis hmm.

I have moved twice in the past year. The first was in Randburg (JHB). I called on a Monday and had my line in on Thrusday.

Then I moved to Fourways. It took a bit longer, but this was due to an upgrade taking place at my exchange. In total I think I waited about 2 weeks.

If you ask for one of the closer packages you dont have to pay for installation. I think its like R10 extra a month, but you also get some cool calling benefits.

Make sure not to sign in to any contracts.

Ask for the self install. They will still send a guy to your place to do all the wiring and stuff, then you just need to set up your own router.

The 384kb line is rated as the best value offering. I think its R152 a month, and I am pretty happy with it. I typically play on local latencies of around 50-60ms which is acceptable IMO.

So, line rental and dsl 384 comes to +- R290 per month. Then, using Afrihost (there are other ISPs?) you can get yourself a 4GB package which comes to R116.

In total, your looking at R406 per month, all in. No installation fees, and with a little luck you should be online in a week or two.

Having said that, I have heard countless horror stories about guys waiting months for their line, but I think this largely depends on where you are. It should not be a problem if you are in a fairly built up area.

Funny thing is I also didnt wait for more than 2 weeks and I was told 2 months minimum waiting period and the guy came in changed the wiring and I had my DSL package and everything sorted within 2days after my installation...

But yeh I pay R199 for a 30gig Local with Open browse from openweb and the R152pm Line Rental which all in all is not bad actually :)

quick question, do they supply a router or would you have to buy your own ?
 
I'm happy with Telkom lately. Phoned them on Friday late at night was around 22:00 and by Saturday morning about 11:00 a tech was at my house. Now that was quick. I stay in PTA BTW.

Well they do supply routers but it is advised to maybe buy your own as you can become familiar with it and it can teach you one or 2 things about how networking works :) you could get urself like a Netgear, Sitecom, Thompson etc... etc... but i would recommend netgear the most :)
