Ok so I'm going to be a Telkom customer again...

quick question, do they supply a router or would you have to buy your own ?

I believe you only get the free router if you sign into a 2 year contract? I stand to be corrected, but am quite sure that this is the case.

The telkom routers, like the mweb ones, are just ISP locked Billion routers.;)

HACK IT!!!!!!! I hate it when ISP's lock you out of your router  hence the reason why i bought mine first time round as I was afraid that if I rented a router they would put a padlock on it and say no go

@ OmegaFenix22 Billion routers are one of the best. Telkom Techs usually have a billion to test the internet connectivity.
@ Tsar The telkom guy came with a Netgear router to test the line

Glad we got a Cisco 800 router from "Internet Solutions" at home. very nice one unless it gets struck by lightning then no router helps.

Fortunately I have a router/modem still from being contract bound by telkom last year. I am looking to have this line installed in PTA east, Garsfontein. I'm expecting the worst for now, as my accomodation might even be on a plot just outside that area.

Also look at an ISP like cybersmart, they have innovative packages that most other ISP do not offer and they are one of the cheaper ISP's out there. I know many people dislike them because they have strict rules and regulations, but for me thats never been a problem.

I pay R350 per month that includes :

Telkom line rental
3gigs international pm (4 gigs now with "grow for life" package)
500 meg local - not alot but enough for me.
"Nightrider" which gives me 20 gigs international bandwidth between 1am and 8am
Local hosting for my website.

This is a good deal. What speed is your line though, 386kb I'm sure? Either way, I will look into this. What does your download speed clock at after 1am?

Don't go cybersmart if you plan to play games online. They are freaking slow cause they work on there own backbone

It is a 386kb line, I pretty much get max speed at that time, its about 39kbs constant download speed.

I have not had any problems playing online, I get a ping of about 80 and I live in Durban so its not at all bad.

Its up to you really, It don't matter to me what ISP you go with its a personal preference really, the best thing to do is go to the websites like Axxess, afrihost, mweb, telkom etc and see what best suits your needs.

The mention of the possible slow gaming is tad of a concern to me now though, as I usually connect to international servers (even how laggy they might be) and also MMO's from time to time. Bit hesitant to sign up and try Cybersmart as wel, for I heard you can't just end your contract/service with them.
