Lately I've been evaluating what parts of my online activity have been contributing positively towards my life and to what extent.

I'm curious to hear which corners of the internet have contributed positively towards your life.

This is an entirely open ended question - i.e. If you and your friends enjoy jamming quake 1 over the weekends then I'd like to hear about it. If you enjoy reading obscure wikipedia archaeology articles then I'd also like to hear about it.
 
My life has changed a lot since I got the net. Made a shit load of friends, won a shit load of goodies, learnt a great deal about the world around me. Its fantastic.
 
Mostly positive.

Learning about the universe,society,psychology and so on.

Unfortunately i struggle to communicate with people normally,i tend to overthink what i want to say.When i do get to a point where i am talking to someone i am almost expressionless or mix up expressions and tone of voice.
 
The internet is great. I connect with so many people regardless of where they are on the planet. VOIP calls make any international work a synch and I keep in contact with friends who live elsewhere.

The coolest thing was basically getting into contact with someone in Amsterdam before I went there. I had to meet up with them and deliver a gift from a mutual friend. When we got to the agreed on meeting place (which we arranged online), we both whipped out Facebook to see what the other looked like before we approached each other. I know this because I saw the person (that I suspected was the one I was supposed to meet) take out her phone at the same time that I did. It would have been much more difficult without online communication.
 
I would say a positive aspect would be a great increase in my knowledge of various things which I choose to learn about.

There are a lot of negatives though.

Yeah, I'm a +1 on both of those points. Especially work related the interwebs has become a abundant plethora of knowledge. No longer does one really need a degree in IT to get a job and keep it when you have the internets.
 
I think the biggest impact it has had for me and most other people is the sheer quantity of free knowledge. Literally everything is on the net. Even MIT has open courses on the internet now which is awesome for people that like to self study.

I think it's great that most our knowledge is stored in some form of global system where everything is easily obtainable.

PS. Nothing beats weeknight boredom like going online and talking shit with your mates on TS and jamming some games :D
 
As a research tool, the internet is invaluable but splitting the nonsense from the knowledge is a difficult task. I use the internet mostly for entertainment purposes: playing Trackmania, watching Hulu or YouTube cats, donwloading games from Steam etc.
