Openweb launches 384 uncapped ADSL gaming package

Yeah, also, about this product... It's a resold IS product, so expect it to stop working after the first month of use. Was on standard uncapped at OpenWeb, and it was unusable after my first month, with no signs of improving and all the signs of just getting worse.

Joy another uncapped service doomed to fail (or am I wrong?). But in any case I'll stick to my measly 10 gig cap from afrihost on my 4 meg line. Not like I really download anything other than patches in anycase and do a bit of random online battle at times :-P

Granted though it's good to see this approach to "game prioritization" XD

Some games struggle on 384k, not because of latency, just because the line gets too congested. As an example its become impossible for those on 384k to do 25 man Cataclysm raids, pretty much put an end to guild progression right there.

Its going to get worse in the next two years. I suspect few if any new games will be playable on 384k.

You're definitely doing it wrong.
My connection had no problem maintaining 300-350ms regardless of raid size. (US server btw)
The only time it went shoddy was the big BG's (AV, etc).

And how many persons do you connect on this line?

i play gt5 on a 384. if theres more than 10 ppl in a lobby i lagg and kill evry1's cars. if theres more than 12 ppl i dc. if thers more than 5 ppl in a room and i use my voicechat i lagg. my question is if this product is so good would the boss at openweb be prepared to put his daughters virginity on the line if i get dc if i voicechat with 16 ppl in a lobby?

This only a small step in what must still be done considering how crap SA's broadband is for the exorbitant amounts for must pay and the below-par service.

i have a 384k line and i have absolutely no probs with online gaming, just patch downloads and become very long. But this is a very good deal i think as I have no problems with 384k, i play wow and in 10 man raids my ms range from 180 - 210 which is pretty decent knowing that it's international, and i play xbox live aswell with almost no delay.

When we first got ADSL we started off with a 384 kb/s line and I'll admit it wasn't TOO bad...totally endurable, but then we upgraded to the next best thing - the 1mb/s line and when you compare it to ANYTHING lower, it feels like you don't even want to go back to anything slower than the 1mb line because everything is just so fast. I agree that SA should work on lowering the prices or increasing the speeds for the prices that we pay :/

Well we just need a decent backbone that isn't controlled solely by telkom. But there are some companies that are working on the the backbone and working on ways to make broadband more affordable in SA. But hopefully LLU will give us some freedom eventually even if it isn't a full implementation as of yet just to free the curret backbone and last mile from the telkom monopoly. But I for see a bright future in telecoms for SA if all goes to plan over the next few years (that is if we don't get wiped out too soon :-P)

I'd rather be without access than going back to the stoneage of 384K. Seems that product is aimed at the slow single user either staying at mom or by self. Only thing that is going to drive down costs is when costs to access IPC drops. Main problem is our local network, it's not as expensive going out or coming it, it's when it has to actually travel from say CT to PTA when it gets $$$. (that's from what I understand)

edit
will1023631, is correct. Decent backbone.

2. Me and my wife.

SeaCom says hi. EASSy also wants to have a word with ya...

Telkom is not necessarily the pipe stuck in the cogwheel. Our ISP's are just as much to blame. I distinctly remember Telkom cutting prices on IPC's a few years ago, and ISP's never passing the (up to) 70% saving on to consumers.

Uhmmm. You do realise that even with those cables we can't handle the load? We still run on a predominantly copper backbone hence why you see people getting throttled on uncapped lines (due to the capacity limits of copper backbones). It is not because we have a lack of bandwidth at all to the outside world. It's just that our grid is already reaching it's peak. And also look at your ADSL account. As you will notice you are A) paying for a phone line (which is barely used thanks to cellphone tech and the internet) and B) your line rental on a 4 meg line is more than the actual cost of the bandwidth. So in essence you're already getting the saving passed on but Telkom still hangs on to it's pricey lines and lackluster backbone that has needed TLC since forever. They also never made accomodation for WACS in Yzerfontein to be implemented into the national grid. In the end as I have mentioned, we need a better national grid so that we can start using WACS, EASSy, Seacom and the coming SAex cable to it's full capacity rather than the dribs and drabs we are pulling at the cost of an arm and a leg

Although I do give Pinky Moholi for adding some life to Telkom.

384 isn't as bad as it sounds for gaming,
but it is at it limit with the game playing and connected to a mumble serve with lowest quality.
You can't multitask and heaven forbid someone starts to use facebook, so this gaming prioritized internet for the guys who rely on there parents for internet and can't explain to them why R899 a month is a good investment. Its at least an alternative.

I haven't had any problems with a 384k line for gaming yet.
The problem isn't the actuall gaming, its the updates that some of the games need.
You can play the games just fine but heaven forbid you need an update in the beginning of the month and the throttling starts to kick in.
