Nintendo announced the Nintendo Web Framework during the Games Developers Conference in San Francisco in March. Essentially, it provides a method of developing software for Wii U by using open web technologies like HTML5 and JavaScript.
Since then it appears to have been a hit with small developers as more than 1,000 have registered their interest in developing games for Wii U, according to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata who was addressing analysts at the E3 analyst briefing.
We have received great feedback. We have been in contact with more than a thousand parties.
Even though software for dedicated gaming devices has become advanced and complex, we have been working on those new approaches to expand the range of developers for the platform. As digital business expands, there will be even more opportunities for us to do business with small, independent software developers.
With the rise of digital gaming it appears the Wii U eShop is opening the door for more indie developers to get a foothold in the market. Hopefully we'll see more great titles appear for download on the eShop soon.

This looks like very good news. Maybe we shall see the gamepad used in really cool ways.

I think they may now be in direct competition with that kickstarter console Ouya or whatever it is called... or perhaps somewhere between that and the new consoles... especially if they keep up the price drops like they have recently.

I highly doubt that. Nintendo have their own league which consists of Nintendo and.... well.. Nintendo.

News of new games is always good to hear...
Now only if they could get more AAA third party dev's interested..

Nice thread Pooky. Good news indeed. Can only mean new ideas, variety and top notch of the new hardware.

AAA third party games have always been way below par on the Wii console, so I'm not really surprised by the lack of AAA third party games on the Wii-U. The AAA third party devs think it's ok to release a sub-par game on the Wii console just because of it's lesser hardware and expect people to buy that just as much as they do on PS3 or Xbox360.

Nintendo's strength lies in it's first party games and those have always been amazing and are set to continue being so.

I'm just not seeing that much innovation in even their first party games right now. Wind Waker looks amazing but it's a literal remake. Mario...sorry... just looks a bit boring and safe. Mario Kart isn't anything special that I can see. Pikmin3 does look great and actually I'd love to play it but not sure when it's coming. And they're losing their exclusives. And new Zelda hasn't even properly begun development. It's not looking very positive.

Didn't the same sort of thing happen with the 3DS?

Kind of but not as drastically.

Anyway I take it back about Mario Kart 8 - I just watched the video and it looks like a lot of fun. There's a real sense of speed and franticness that the last few versions were missing.

Mario kart is quite fun I enjoyed it on the DS and on the 3ds xl :D

Did you read the article where they said that the Wind Waker game is a training exercise to get their developers familiar with the new hardware?
