Overclocking the ASUS Maximus IV Extreme

Hi there. I wanna know what is wrong. Everytime I try to do a level up cpu that is in the bios it makes my raid config die. Do you guys know what could be wrong? I just wanna over clock for fun. Same thing happens when I wanna set my ram to 1600. Its on 1333 at the moment. Please help.
 
Hmmm.
Could be the board is faulty.
And/or the memory.

Lets start with "How are you setting memory to 1600?"
Just change the multiplier?
Just change the FSB?
A little of both?

And why are you trying to set your mem to 1600 if it's 2000 rated?
 
Something else I'm noticing in your signature...

Windows is only rating your CPU at 7.7?
That's not right.
Not right at all... My Phenom II X4 955BE gets a 7.9 from Windows... something definitely seems wrong.

EDIT: Make that 7.8 (could've sworn it was 7.9, oh well!)

That is very strange for me aswell. i had a i7 920 with my last rig and i did not even get 7.9 with it overclocked to 3.8. so i dont know why its running so low.

See with this mobo you you have an easy option to overclock the CPU to 1 or 2 up(think 4.2 and 4.6 could be wrong). Its a feature called CPU level up. Now everytime i do that it sets the other stuff to default, including setting all the satas to non raid and then i cant set it back because one of the SSD's fails.

The reason i dont want to set my ram all the way to 2000 now is i wanna do some testing at 1600. I have read that those 400mhz is not going to make that much of a difference so why do it now. Spare the extra heat for now(could not put ram fans on due to the coolermaster v8 size and the ram height, does not fit). when i change the ram from 1333 to 1600 should i change the timings?
 
Yes, it is recommended you consult the manufacturer for timings.
Not setting them won't cause your SSD to not work though...

It will simply be slow and/or cause your system to BlueScreen at times, and/or not boot at all.

The voltages could be whats screwing with you though.

My MSI board also has this "easymode overclocking" feature, but it causes more problems than it solves.
Try clocking manually, if anything.
But be warned, clocking can be VERY dangerous.
Warranty will not cover any damages.

My recommendation:
Try getting your system to boot normally with the CPU at it's rated speed.
Memory at it's rated speed and timings.
Etc etc.

Once you have that tested and stable, then start tweaking on the CPU overclocking.
 
i am not worried about the memory causing the SSD's not to work. Its everytime i try overclock that the raid config dies. Not only the memory but the cpu aswell. This is not the first time i am overclocking. It is however the first time overclocking on this board. System is running 100% at stock speeds, booting, games etc. The problem lies where i try to oc and the raid config dies, then i have to reinstall windows and all the games and updates and and and. Dont wanna try oc again and then i have yet another raid failure. Just had an idea though will test it tonight. hmmm.
 
okay. i have just found out that there is a auto overclocking tool that comes with the mobo. gonna try that and see if the raid freaks out for that strange reason. Dont know what its gonna do to the ram?

Dunno, but like I said... these autoclock features create more problems than they end up solving (most times)
 
I'd say contact someone like Computersonly or similar, but if you didn't buy from them, they might not be inclined to help you. Also, not many retailers are going to especially give telephonic assistance with OCing and some not even at all due to what could go wrong.
 
Been busy working for a few hours, but I did remember something about your raid problem.

If the setting to "step-up" your CPU in BIOS (or the auto-clock features etc) makes any adjustments to your PCI clock, multiplier or timing, that will cause your raid to fail.

Try clocking your CPU manually.
Easiest for testing would be to just increase the voltage slightly, alongside a single multiplier increase.
(DO NOT change the FSB in any way!)

If that still breaks your raid, something is wrong with the board.
