Parental Corner

My son loved it. Was so awesome to see his face light up and he couldn't believe how father Xmas knew his name.

This brings me to an interesting thought.

In today's world kids are becoming more mature at a quicker rate. This is probably due to us as parents, but none-the-less my question t you guys is simple. With Xmas tomorrow, do you bring up your kids with the belief of Father Xmas, and this goes for other things too. The tooth fairy, Jack Frost, Easter Bunny etc?

Well we do, I agree that kids are growing up a lot quicker, but keeping the simple things alive as long as possible I.e. Santa etc are great fun and the looks in our boys eyes when they see what Santa brought is priceless.

That made me smile, thanks.

I'm a little worried. My son is a very active boy, he cant sit for long periods, he is just very busy, easily frustrated and . At pre-school, he is 4 and half, and the teacher (luckily we had an awesome teacher last year, which understood him and knew sort of how to handle him.)
He a behind in learning his language, although he has been playing catch up extraordinarily the last couple of months.

I know people say, boys are boys and they should be busy, I get that, but he is like an energizer bunny. Like I mentioned, school is a problem, he cant sit still for too long, doesn't concentrate well, sometimes doing his own thing.

He isn't stupid at all, he can build puzzles above his age group, problem solving is his joy. I let him play those Lego Batman / Marvel games on XBox and he goes through them easy.

Yesterday we had him at a specialist, which diagnosed him with ADHD and prescribed Ritalin. He said, there are lots of stories about the medication, but its been in use for 60 years and have helped a lot of children.

But, me, being the over protective parent, is worried about the medication. I don't what my son to suffer, either because he can't concentrate at school or because of the side effects of Ritalin. I'll be honest and say I don't know much about the medication, just the bad things you hear.

No offense to you or anyone mention in that post VirtualForce. But I was thinking about the same sort of scenario the other day. This is kinda the problem with today's society. 20 years ago an active child was just that, active. BUT we had the joy of the outdoors, nowadays it's just not as safe as it used to be to play out in the street. Now all of a sardine we have an active kid, and BAM! he's ADHD... I don't buy into this whole ADHD bullshit. I mean sure, there may be a time a place for it but I just think they come up with the diagnosis WAY to easily.

I say let him run around, limit the video games to weekends only and on a time constraint. Try and tire him out by being a lot more physical. Does he really battle to concentrate?
I mean shit, I am only 32 years old, 20 years ago when I was in school I don't remember talk about Ritalin in schools and kids. Suddenly we have this influx of kids who are ADHD and not able to focus and concentrate. HE's A KID FFS!!!
At 4 years old, I doubt you were planning your life goals and sat down for hours.

*woooosah* Sorry, I don't mean to come across too harsh or hating here, but as you may tell, it's a sensitive subject for me. Kids will be kids. And I wish you all the best with your little one, I pray he isn't deficient in any manner and that all works out.

Dude, whatever you do try not to even get your child started on Ritalin. Yes it's an amazing drug and snaps ADHD kids right back into "normality" however the side effects can be life changing and the long term effects is just plain not worth it. My sister was on ritalin for over 10 years. She had insomnia (and still does) due to the effects Methylphenidate (the active ingredient in Ritalin) has on the dopamine funtion in the brain. As a result of the extensive and continued use of Ritalin her reaction to normal dopamine levels is so numbed. Many kids (and there are loads of these studies) turn to supporting drugs (legal or illegal) to try and stimulate these "highs" they got when they were on Ritalin. My sister is really a mentally damaged adult as a result of this. She has been hunting for "highs" since getting off Ritalin more than 10 years ago. Briefly went back on it to try and complete her studies (she got withdrawal symptoms) and is completely off Ritalin now. However she has been in and out of rehab (for cocaine addiction and ecstasy use) as these drugs made her feel like she felt on Ritalin. She is suffering from depression as nothing she does (relationships, jobs, etc) gives her any sense of achievement or satisfaction. This is due to the long term and permanent affects of Ritalin use according to her doctors.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer as to what an alternative remedy is for ADHD, however I would very strongly recommend that you stay as far away from Ritalin as possible.

I have to agree with Beo and Psyco - Don't go the meds route. There are so many ways to help a child out who is hyperactive - I know I was one of those and was very lucky that I had teachers who realised I needed more variety during the day as a child. Just do some research there is a lot of info out there on how to help a hyperactive kid. The best is to find him so activities and sports to help him burn off the energy. I did a lot of sports and afterschool activities which helped tire me out and doing various things and shortening the learning sessions to 30mins with 15mins of play or relax time in between, it worked out well for me since I did well in school and sports.

the bookkeeper from my old firm's one son was also diagnosed with ADHD and she also refused to put him on ritalin. instead she is now making more time for him in the evenings to go over his homework etc and they have also got him doing gymnastics and karate to help with the extra energy and this seems to be working. you just have to stimulate him and get him into a strict routine.

I have to agree with everyone, I am against brain altering medication unless it is truly necessary, and ADHD is widely considered to be way over-diagnosed at the moment. Get a second opinion, maybe try something homeopathic first if you want to try giving him something. Otherwise, like everyone says, find ways to get him active to try burn some of that energy.

I'm a bit concerned about my boy as well, who seems to be always running all over the place while the other kids sit and play nicely, but most of my friends have girls, and I think boys are just more energetic and adventurous at this age, and he seems a bit more so than most. He does at least sit still for a bit to read a book or do a puzzle so I don't think he's ADD at least, and he's already learned 1-10 (up and down) and the whole alphabet, and a word or two for each letter, and lots of animals and their sounds, and some shapes and colours, and he's picking up new words every day, which is pretty good going for a 19 month old as far as I understand these things, so I don't think he has trouble learning.

Also white noise machines are awesome for studying. As an adult I find I struggle to study - I get distracted easily. So I use a white noise maker app on my phone and I can study for 45mins at a time and actually take in the info. During exams I do take a beta blocker tho to help me concentrate. My GP prescribed it for me and a packet of 10 tablets lasts me 2 years! I just take one or two to help me calm down and concentrate. I tend to panic during exams for some reason, and I asked Unisa if I can use the white noise app during my exams but it is not allowed obviously.

We bought a white noise CD to help our kiddie sleep, not sure if it helped or not, but I think at least it helps to not make other noises stand out that might otherwise wake him up.

Try it as soon as he starts school and he has to study. I wish I had it when I was in school, it would have made a huge difference and I suspect I would have been a solid B or A student. Im basing that on the fact that now I am averaging B's for the uni work I do. (all except the Tax subjects but that is more because I find it dull :P)

I'll keep it in mind thanks. I might try it out myself next time I'm doing some research or struggling with some code.

It really works like a charm. The app I am using on android is called WhiteNoise Concentration. I have been thru many of them but this one works like a charm since it is just a shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh kinda noise that really drowns out everything else. And you dont have to put it on loud. I use earphones and play it softly and it works to the extent that someone needs to tap me on my shoulder to get my attention. I do find 45mins is the max I can do at a time, otherwise I get a weird kinda lightheaded feeling.
