Parental Corner

So.... anyone else's kid(s) bring home "rocks" for their rock collection (which is just stones they find in the playground or road)?

Just about every day he comes home with a pocket full.

I did that for about 6 months, just put them in a shoe box, then once a week make him go thru the box, and a book on stones and start teaching him about them. It is where I realised books are awesome.

That's the thing. It's not like it's any special stones. Just the usual ones you find on the ground or used on tar or cement.

My daughter.
Rocks and peach pips from the peach tree in our garden.
Bucket loads :)

Not in a while though, now they need to sparkle.

Yep but this way you can show him that they are boring stones, the first month I brought home a pnp bag full of stones. Mum made me go thru it and we only kept the "special" stones. Do the same with him

I want to start getting my son something he can collect, be it cars or figurines, pins or badges.

What are your guys/gals thoughts, and any suggestions?

I had a sick fascination with dinosaurs and WWII era planes, tanks and battleships as a child. Would spend hours assembling scale models, painting and decorating.

I would go for cars, simply because it wont dissapear as a fad.

Maybe it's just me, but I get irritated when he starts playing with them. I mean sure I know they're "toys" and they're his and he has every right to, just frustrates me when you get this collection going then some go missing or get broke.

So not LEGO? :3

My brother and I never collected anything, all our monies went into buying new Lego and expanding our collection. The more parts/blocks you have the more stuff you can build.

well he loves his lego, but doesn't really build anything constructive, yet!

He digs his dinosaur figures, but if it wasn't bad enough the T-Rex having short arms, now he has none!

I'm hoping to get my kids into a mineral or coin collection thing.
Toys are fun but when you grow up in SA they don't always have much value.

But the value should not be monetary, the value is what the child places on their collection, like their own value to them. It should not be something you can sell or replace, I feel that's not the point of it. They should be proud of it.

Yea of course :) and they like to play with their things.

Fair point.

Sorry, not in context with what you said previously (collection), just that toys would likely be more fun than stones to collect.

I know my wife has dolls she collected as a girl (little porcelain things with traditional dresses) and my daughter loves them now :)

Yeah I understand, but he has so many toys as it is, half of which are broken and or otherwise. Though he still plays with em.
