PC enjoys most online play

I've never actually done it, but isn't it also a bit of a mission to set up a console to play online? I may be wrong but you can't just connect it straight to the router, it has to go through a PC? Am i talking crap?

In my opinion this is true that PC gives more efficiency then other console. PC is the only thing that we can access which we want anytime.
This is also supports all type of games and softwares where other consoles can't but PC has the sufficient configuration to enable this.
I know PS2 and XBOX has more graphics then PC but there are many games which has less complexity to play the game.

Seriously 2005 called, they want their argument back. The PS2 and the Xbox are not good comparisons.

If this is the case with your PC, dispose of it, immediately. You could try handing it over to a technology museum.

I doubt I'd ever be able to comfortably have long MMO sessions in front of my TV =/

Your loss then. And besides, it is not necessarily just your TV, most good PC monitors can handle consoles. Also that kind of thinking only holds a person back. Like all the mouse + keyboard diehards who cannot deal with using a controller to play a game.

I'm quite confused by your statement. What exactly is the issue with people having preferences as to how they game? The only thing that would hold a gamer back is forcing them to use a controller that they aren't comfortable using. It sounds like you're suggesting that they should simply suck it up and deal with it without giving any reasons as to why, exactly.

Anyway, I very highly doubt MMO's will take off on consoles on the scale they've taken off on PC's unless keyboards are adopted as peripherals by console manufacturers. MMO's aren't the average FPS for which there are enough mappable buttons on a standard controller. They tend to have far more commands, and if a game such as Oblivion's controls were so awkward on Xbox, I can only imagine what trying to operate a full-on MMO would be like.

But even apart from that, how would we communicate? Sure, voice chat is all good and well, but it's simply not a feasible option in cases such as trading districts or mass gatherings. MMO's would thus have to be adapted to suit consoles, and I fail to see how that will happen without stuffing up the core of what it means to play an MMO. Chat pads are all very well and good, but they're quite awkward to use in themselves. It would seem like a serious step back in the controller department.

Then on top of it all players would be required to pay not only the MMO's monthly fee, but in the case of Xbox Live, for example, a subscription fee too.

Nope...I definitely don't see it happening soon.

I also don't know if MMO's will venture into the console realm. The only reason I see why not is risk of not knowing if it will be successful.

But there might be some developments in future as I know that Turbine is working on a console version of Lord of the Rings Online MMO.

Blizz once commented on bringing a MMO to consoles. It's something they had definitely thought about, but one of the big hurdles was the controller. Specifically the issues you mentioned, lack of mappable keys and chat. Since you cannot expect or count on console gamers having keyboards, they jokingly asked if they should bundle them with the game. For most MMOs, you can to an extent get around the mouse requirement with "tab" targeting. I don't envision it being the best experience playing support in a group of 40 people however.

For this generation of consoles, I can pretty confidently say MMOs are not going to take off on that platform. For the next generation of consoles however, I don't see why it couldn't if Sony/Microsoft take the genre into account when designing them. Heck, either one could tout it as a selling point over their competitor, "PS4/Xbox 720 now MMO Ready!".

Preferences are perfectly fine Lydon, but I am just trying to point out that those same preferences will hold a person back servilely in the longrun. Things change, and I think that most of the people that complain about controllers are the one's that either have never gotten used to them, they find them to challenging for some reason, or are in a gaming rut.

Look at the example of FPS's you mentioned. For how long did people think they would never work on consoles? Then suddenly Halo worked, and then everything changed in a HUGE way. Then there are RTS's; they too used to be the sole domain of the PC, and that also changed. While I agree they can be better with a mouse + keyboard setup, I disagree that they cannot work well ,and this also goes for MMO's. An example of an MMO that uses controllers well - FFXI Online.

FFXI Online works amazingly on controller, actually it works better than on a keyboard + mouse! Now no one must tell me that game is easy, or dumbed down, because then you have not played it. You see the current gen of MMO's are designed for a mouse + keyboard. Obviously they will not seem feasible on console at the moment, but then I bring you back to FFXI Online which was, and works well on a controller. Now this is not including the idea that they may even move to a mouse + keyboard setups on console, which the current core MMO market will be likely to buy into if the games are decent.

And on the topic of communication. Voice is fine for any party based content, and the pad works fine when trading. Again people may prefer to use a keyboard to communicate in groups, however like the idea of not wanting to use a controller to game, only wanting to use a keyboard will hold a person back since voice is the preferred medium for group based play (just get into hardcore raiding, tactical FPS play, or whatever and you will see that).

As far as the fee goes, that is hypothetical argument. I can also use hypothetical reasoning and say that devs may reduce the price slightly, or Microsoft may make some kind of a concession for the MMO devs. Either way it is a weak barrier to overcome.

Look, FFXI Online WORKED on console very well since it was designed for it. Tons of people played it on console and they had no problems. FFXIV Online is coming to BOTH consoles (according to leaked info). The gaming industry and the shift towards console gaming would be fools if they did not see this potential market, and they are not. Many have commented that they are looking into it, Blizzard being the obvious one.
