PC Monitor prices will be going up

Ad valorem excise duties on monitors were abolished in 2004 based on the assumption that they were used as computer screens. “However, some monitors are also used as televisions, which are subject to ad valorem tax,” the document states.

Does it have a receiver? Then how is it used it as a television? The product in and of itself is a MONITOR, a DISPLAY DEVICE, not a TELEVISION.

ANC logic strikes again.

So it's like this see: "Hey guys, instead of actually doing some work and spending money on creating jobs to increase our taxbase - which is already pretty stressed - let's not do anything and tax monitors! YAY! LALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALALA! I CAN'T HEAR YOU!"

No really, these guys HAVE to have a writer. You can't make this shit up.

So.....if you use your TV as a monitor.....do you get your money back?

I know loads of people who do this just hook up your decoder and your sorted. Glad the CEO of mustek said it can be dodged, that's where we get most of ours from.

C'mon, 7% on a 2 grand screen is a 140 bucks. Thats not really that much now is it? Only people who would really be impacted are those who go and buy Plasma Ültra Über Definition five million inch screens.

On that same note. It's still not right.

Dude I think what they are referring to is the fact that most of us download our movies, TV shows, Music Vids, etc... off the internet and use our PC's as "TV's" because some of us choose to watch our stuff without adverts is all... :)

I don't think you can call that television. It's just displaying media from your computer. ie being a monitor

How can they charge tax so you can display media from your pc? Say you want to watch the video you took of your kid's play or something for example, have to pay tax for the privilege.

To be used as a TV, you would need another device that has a tuner, which they will already have taxed you for. So now if you want to use your monitor as a TV, you must pay double tax, but if you want to use it as a monitor (which is what it's meant for), then you have to pay tax for nothing.

Just another money making scheme

Some people hook up their monitors to DSTV decoders or use TV cards in their PCs. That I could understand, but seriously, to tax everybody across the board? That is simply unfair.

Then again, How much are we talking in R value here? I'm not saying it's right, but is it really that much?

Out of interest, aren't we already paying 14% VAT? So is the 7% on the non-VAT price, or is it on the VAT price? If it is on the VAT price I think I will march up to the parliament buildings and moer someone!

Its the principle, if they want to tax you because you are using a device to watch tv then they should have put 7% ad valorem on tv tuner cards and not monitors.

All products gets taxed the 14% normal vat. Other products are subject to duties and ad valorem tax on top of that, basicly a silly tax in order to protect local industries(never agreed with it and never will if the industry can't survive on its own you should be focusing on other stronger industries).

Not sure if the 7% is added before or after vat.
