Petrol price expected to soar to R16 per litre

If the rand's depreciation continues unchecked , a petrol price price of R16 per litre is possible.

"Last week, SA Reserve Bank governor Gill Marcus said the weak rand exchange rate affected the petrol price, which in December and January increased by an accumulative 55 cents per litre.

A further increase in the petrol price of 30 cents per litre was expected in February due to the weak exchange rate.

The AA expressed concern that the knock-on inflationary effect of the recent fuel price hikes would send further shocks into the economy.

Last year's credit data showed that almost half of credit-active consumers had an "impaired" credit record.

"We believe it will be very difficult for such people to absorb the effects of ongoing fuel price increases," the AA said."

Time to start looking for a bike.

More than a rand a km...crazy stuff man.

I had an old CTI a few years ago, and that thing was doing R1 a km then. It hurt me. Badly. But a mate had a CBR600 and that thing chowed more fuel than his BMW. So I don't know man.

I luckily downgraded my car from a 2.4 to a 1.4, but now it seems diesel seems to be the better way out. Much better mileage.

Im already at the stage where i pay R1 per KM, and if i use my aircon it knocks about 50km off a tank...

More increases may have to look into getting a more economical car since 8l/100 km is a bit high with the prices.

This makes me happy for my little 1.2l Picanto that gives me 6 - 6.5 l/100km around town

But you gotta weigh up the cost of replacement. 8l/100km isn't too too bad, and a brand new 1.4 car gets around min 6l/100km or something. That extra 1-2litres extra per 100km isn't much. I mean, if you do 1000km a month, thats only 20litres extra for the 8l/100km car, which is R14*20 = R280. Even at R16/l its R320.

Way less than car payments

Higher petrol prices mean higher everything prices this year is gonna be tough a lot of people are gonna suffer.

Yeah, it makes me sick thinking how much I'm paying for my car right now. :(

And I dont have an extravagant car either, little economical 1.4.

Im the same bro... 1.4 ford fiesta, like R550 to fill it up... Thankfully my car is paid off so i dont have that expense lingering over me...

I spend about R5k for owning and driving a car. Thats repayments, insurance and petrol....such is life.

Pretty average for buying a car I presume?

Well with a Honda I won't have to service the car for 5 years so will save on that compared to my current car and will pay cash.

Not sure how much 5 years of services and problems etc will equal have not worked it out yet.

My usage is quite low I only use a tank or less every month and mostly for work who pays me R2.50/km so cancels out.

Services are still generally at 15000km intervals regardless of make/model. Unless you do less than that there's no avoiding services.
