Photo realistic graphics possible wihin 10 years: Epic

So in ten years time they say...hmm funny, just the other day (few months ago) an article was posted on a modded Skyrim build with this screenshot...I'd say we're closer than we think...

Art style > graphics.

Crysis 3 and Battlefield 3 are both the most photo-realistic games we currently have, but they're both ugly as sin.

I also want my Skyrim to look like that ;_; Gotten pretty damn close, but for some odd reason my vegetation mods don't want to play along with D=

But yeah, we're so damn close I can almost smell it. I sometimes wonder what they base their predictions on. Never seems to be very objective =/ Then again, it's hard to quantify something as abstract as this since each person has different opinions on what they define as "photo realistic". Though I suspect he implies that we won't need to use all sorts of deceptive tricks to create the illusion of photo realism in the next 10 years where for example, each individual leaf on a tree, every blade of grass and every single hair will be individually rendered in real time rather than having to rely on textures that give off that illusion. Damn vague chops D=

I have to admit my thoughts on this is a little bit concerning re games.

What if games become so photo realistic that it's not a game anymore? So basically now we're going to be playing games that are basically just an extension of our everyday life, including all the boring and mundane things we want to get away from by playing games?

Like a photo realistic vacuum cleaning simulation.

Or maybe it will become a genre? If that's what you're into. But there will always be games that will still look like a "game" and not a photo realistic simulation. I think.

I have to agree with graal. Art style is way more important than pretty graphics.

It can also convey so much more. Like emotion and atmosphere.

I agree... Dishonored is one of the prettiest games I have played fairly recently, and it runs on pretty much anything.

If something is aesthetically pleasing then I will buy it doesnt matter how the graphics etc. are done as long as it ticks that box.

To make an image look photo-realistic -- your colour choosing has to be very precise to (as close as possible) mimic colours as true-to-life as possible.

Some games still look too overbright -- or, it'll have an excessive amount of HDR or Bloom lighting.
Battlefield 3 has one of the best true-to-life colour scheming that I've seen in modern day gaming. Its only downfall; it has this tint. This blue tint. And that (for me) takes away from a supposedly 'photo-realistic' experience.

Thats a pretty bold claim given that in 10 years time it won't be 1920*1080 - it'll be full field of vision. Thats a whole lot of pixels to render...

Plus for photo realistic you need ray tracing - no way around that. Right now that murders absolutely all the gear out there, even for modest scenes.

That renders at like 4fps though.

tbh I'd describe it more as atmospheric than pretty. Not exactly the same in my books. Fantastic game though.
