Pick your poison: Linux or Windows

I was keen on doing this a while ago. The only problem that I have with this is app and game support, which seems to be improving. Perhaps I should review my choice in 6 months and see how far things have come.

i properly stay with windows, i need to use windows for job purpose.

No question linux did make quite some improve last few years.

The thing is I game'd alot on linux and found the high end picture quality is not the same as it is on windows. Graphics are a bit more blockish. I think the author should follow the D3 example of comparing images lined up against one another. I forget which website and the link. I think it was comparing games on xbox vs pc. So load a few games on windows and linux and record or capture the images/ footages and whatever else and post them.

I don't see how Steam 'changes the game' for Linux... it's just porting all the 10 year old Valve games. They need exclusives or at least cutting edge titles like Crysis being made with OpenGL support from the gate, and that simply isn't happening. I wish it was viable, because I'd love to switch over to Linux, but I don't see it.

i have linux and windows. So im in for both of them. I know windows more than linux.

But one linux OS i cant stand is Ubuntu. IDK it was ever since the 1st few versions came out i never liked it.

If it weren't for game compatability ( wine gives too much crap ) , I would delete my windows completely and use mint alone. Freakin tired of all these restrictions on windows, ever since I started with linux I never want to go back to a non open-source OS. If only the general public was more computer literate we would have dev studios making games for linux.

dude i have mint but on my mini laptop but i need to get a torrent download program. I use Utorrent due to it has remote option. I looked for it for linux and it only has server >< im looking for one that allows me to remote similar to Utorrent.

It's not got much to do with the general computer illiteracy of the public. Windows has more developer support because it courts the devs and enables them to make money. It's as simple as that. Devs go where the money is. Linux is a ghetto for them.

linux is too fragmented imo some stuff that runs on ubuntu will maybe not run on debian or mint even though ubuntu is a branch of debian. etc eg. steam for linux only works on ubuntu as far as i know and not everyone uses that.

Pretty much this. We've had clients come to us and ask for Linux before and we simply say no. One of the government departments told us that the whole gov is going on linux and we're going to lose the business if we don't convert. That was years ago (they're still on Windows) and even if we lose all gov clients, it still wouldn't be worth the trouble.

LOL the Gov using linux that would make service worse when they cant even use the pc >< yea i would have done the same

They were sold when they heard the word "free" and the idea is to completely move away from Microsoft. I still think it is a dream though because they do use a lot of custom applications that won't be available for Linux.

Not to mention the enormous amounts of training they'd need to do to smooth out the transition. It would be a total disaster.

It has everything to do with computer literacy. If more people realized how restricted windows is, many would ditch it and go over to Linux. Meaning a larger market for Linux.

Right. Linux is much messier than windows in terms of drivers and standards. But as one dev said,
Common wisdom in the games industry is that you can't make money making games for Linux simply because the market isn't big enough. That's why AAA shops don't do Linux ports any more.

^This is the main reason why almost no linux ports are made. And why is the market so small? Because everybody uses windows. If more people understood the advantages of linux , and not go for the macOS or windows simplicity crap, the linux market would be much bigger.

Also what stops the devs from building their games with openGL, if there was a bigger linux market? Sure , there are more costs involved in developing and testing cross platform, won't that be covered by the linux sales then.

If only audio and debugging ( which i saw is terrible ) on linux could be improved, gdb being slow as f**k , requiring a lot more thinking than ide, then linux would be near perfect IMO.

LOL the government monkeys using linux? Hahahahhaha, this is too good!

Linux. The only reason I stay with windows is for gaming. I mostly program in ruby so Linux is a must.

Linux is more suited for programmers, although I am frustrated at some of the bugs that Windows has,I use it on a daily basis for work and gaming.

I'm a fairly computer literate individual. I know how restrictive Windows is. I still largely prefer to work in Windows because of the ease of use and conformance with professional standards and software. Every interaction I've had with Linux has been frustrating from start to end.

Most people gladly sacrifice openness for drivers and standards.

Why did games developers flock to iOS within the past few years? Apple provided a safe haven and a way to monetise, and users were paying money for the games. Linux has had the opportunity to do something in gaming for years and they've just flubbed it.
