Piracy: When is it "acceptable"?

The few gaming titles that really interest me, I will buy. Changed a lot as I got older because titles got less and less.
Movies and series - full on pirate, don't care *shrug*
Music has also changed since the advent of bandcamp and stuff. There are a ton of artists I personally know now and I support their work because of it. To hell with big labels, I know the $10 I spend is all going to the artist so I'll gladly continue that.

TEMPT ME NOT SATAN! :p

I'm a filthy pirate, and I will always justify my reasons for pirating certain games, always. That said, I do buy games, and even buy games I myself don't intend on playing. I'm not a cheapskate (I'm a bargain hunter, there's a difference ;))

It's not acceptable though, because we aren't barbarians. Picking your nose in public is also not acceptable :p
I feel people are focusing too much on the acceptable part. it isn't, that's why I put it in quotation marks

Putting things in quotation marks doesn't make it acceptable okay!!!!!!! =D

Pretty much in the same boat as everyone else, hardly pirate games anymore, if I do its usually just to give it a try before actually buying it.

Also the problem with pirating PC games is that you can only really pirate single player games, most games I get now are multiplayer so you have to buy it.

While I don't pirate any games or software, when it comes to TV series these days... quite a bit.
Dstv is just bombarding us with too much series at a time and I can't get around to watch everything. As soon as a season finishes, they already start showing the next season. They used to make only one season per year which was more than manageable, but for people who don't spend every available second in front of a tv, it is impossible to keep up. Both my PVRs are full and catch-up doesn't last long enough. So basically I'm downloading all the episodes that I'm missing with the hopes to watch it all sometime. I've already paid my Dstv subscription to watch them and I'm deleting them after watching.

The reason Monochoice shows back to back seasons of certain shows is because they're sometimes 6 months+ behind the US. They are now stepping up their game with certain shows as part of their "Express from the US" crap. However, its only for between 4-6 shows at any given stage. Take Chicago PD and Chicago Fire that's currently showing on MNET, they are 6 behind the US . But with Chicago Med which will air on Wednesday they are 1 week behind. Now these three shows have a lot of crossover between the shows and can seriously screw up continuity. The Big Bang Theory, DSTV is behind by 3-4 weeks. WHY!? In this day and age there should be no reason for digital content (even 1080p@60fps with multiple audio streams) to take 3 weeks to get from the source to the authorized broadcast rights holder in another country. Funny how they can do it within 24 hours for some shows but will take weeks for others.

I think it all comes down to the money. the licensing probably cost a lot more to get it earlier

Did you know, that if you didn't watch a series the absolute moment it released, nothing bad would happen to you....

I know, that sounds like the biggest lie on the internet, because we all know that you ABSOLUTE HAVE TO have the latest show RIGHT NOW!!!

But, hey, that's the world we live in. Instant gratification is what we all want out of everything, including getting access to content, either games or series or anything else. Hype is something not only exclusive to gaming and movies, but series as well. We cannot wait to get the latest episode and would do anything to get our hands on it. Hence why we pirate.

DSTV has been trying their best to keep us as up-to-date as possible to ensure we pirate less and less. The quicker they can show the episodes of our favourite series, the less inclined we will be to pirate them. But, many different series has some stupidly complex and expensive exclusive deals with different networks, ensuring that those networks get the content exclusively for a few weeks to drive viewing numbers. This, coupled with geographic licensing and FPB rating ballocks, will mean that there are some series that can only realistically be shown here within a few weeks after their air date. By that time, our insatiable lust for content has caused us to download those episodes a long time ago.

It's not a DSTV exclusive issues either. Netflix is also not that up to date with every single series in their roster. Same goes for Hulu. To get everything you want at the time it's released, piracy is probably the only way.

It's most certainly not the right thing to do, and in all honestly it's very possible to just wait a few weeks for content. But hey, we need our series fix man.

I'm not passing judgement without realizing my own fault. I too have pirated many series in my day, and still do. But, I've found myself not nearly as intoxicated by the need of having all the series episodes the moment they are released, and I'm more than content to watch it as they are shown on DSTV. With Game Of Thrones this was particularly difficult, but luckily the series was simulcasted here, albeit it was shown at 3 am, but still.

Now, games. I haven't pirated a game in a very long time. With Steam sales there just isn't a need to pirate as much anymore, as it's much easier to afford games nowadays.

we seem to have a DSTV sympathizer in our midst...

JK :p

I HAVE to watch certain shows as they release for 2 reasons

1, Because I NEED to know what happens next

and B, because the internet and most people in general make it hard to avoid spoilers.

Lies ALL Lies! I tried that once! The next Day I felt horrible. Felt Sick! Had no Idea what was going on in the world! There was no reason to continue the day without knowing what happened in the previous episode of 7de Laan. So please... DO not try at at home.

yeah, nothing bad like logging on to news24 and reading about a shocking plot twist that aired in your favorite TV show when it aired in the US 4 weeks before the same episode airs in South Africa

I don't mind waiting a bit for the series. I hate when they go on production break and leave you hanging for a couple of months in the middle of the season. I'd rather have everything at once even if it is a couple of months after it originally aired.
Only exception though is Game of Thrones. That stuff you need to see as soon as possible because spoilers are freakin everywhere.

multichoice is now watching all of you the op is obviously a spy.

Interstingly I think the need to have games as soon as they release is less than series as we are willing to wait for games to be patched and extra content to be added before we buy and as a bonus the price has usually decreased at that point as well, at least that's how I often feel.
