Sony has unlocked more of PlayStation 4's CPU, providing additional power for game developers to work with.

According to the latest changelog notes for the system's FMOD audio middleware, which were posted on the Beyond3D forums, the seventh processing core of Sony's home console has been unlocked. "PS4 - Added FMOD_THREAD_CORE6 to allow access to the newly unlocked 7th core," the notes read.

Eurogamer has confirmed with its contacts that more processing power has indeed been unlocked and is now available for use by game developers. That said, the outlet was careful to note existing games won't take advantage of the extra power unless the title is updated with a patch to add support.

We've reached out to Sony for comment and will update this story as soon as we receive a response.

Earlier this year, Microsoft did something similar for Xbox One, opening up access to a large portion of the console's seventh processing core, providing more power for game developers to work with.

I find it odd how console manufacturers "lock" hardware features of the current generation. Do they have a roadmap planned whereby they unlock new features of the console to enhance longevity? Next thing we hear will probably be some extra RAM that will magically appear and allow developers to increase textures sizes and whatnot.

This is not a new thing I know the ps3 and vita had some sort of upgrade, If I remember correctly the ps3 ram size was increased for games and the vita had a overclock I think. Its all down to Sony optimizing the O.Stherefore freeing up resources for developers to use in game development.
