Playstation VR could cost as much as your PS4

Party time! Excellent!
In a recent story from Bloomberg, Sony‘s CEO Andrew House spoke with the website at Tokyo Game Show 2015 about the upcoming Playstation VR headset they are planning to launch next year. In terms of price, House did not give any kinds of numbers, but did say the item would retail for around the same price of a new gaming platform. While there is word that Sony will be lowering the price of the Playstation by the time the VR headset becomes available, some speculate the headset will retail for somewhere around $300 when it comes out early next year. In the quick interview with Bloomberg, House spoke about the hopes the company has for the Virtual Reality addition to their current generation of gaming tech.

“VR rewrites the rule book on how you can create games. You’re seeing a large amount of interest and work happening among smaller teams, because it’s possible to create something in VR that is very simple but still very magical.”

So far, the only other major Virtual Reality headsets that are entering into the battle over gaming superiority include The Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive. This is not to say there are other lesser-recognized competitors, but those two seem to be the names that are most commonly associated with each other. Neither competitor has announced an official price on their consumer models at this time either, but all have been speculated to land anywhere between $200 and $500 when they launch. The major question that hangs in the air, though, is how many gamers will be willing to pay as much as they would for two consoles to play ten or so games at the time of PSVR’s launch.

I actually expected it to be more costly than the console... considering what it is... and its "new tech" so this doesnt really surprise me...

Not surprised. I have a dk2 (will get the vive when released) and that thing cost me about R7000 when import costs were added.

Yeah biggest surprise for me would be its at the same price and not more.

At a price like that they really better have some epic, actual games lined up. I got caught up in the hype for the PS Move and dropped the measly R750 on it and there was not a single game that put it to actual good use (not talking about party games). So far I've seen no VR game that compares to a quality AAA title, but I'm hoping they've got something awesome in development. But even so, I'd be very hesitant to buy one. It isn't like a console where you know there'll be a quality stream of games for 10+ years. I am however excited to see what VR brings to the gaming table.

Even without those import costs, is it worth the price?

Early adoption with extremely new technology is never a good idea. As brendanvb pointed out, the PlayStation Move also looked interesting but had little to no support a year after launch.

For me the experience is like no other, playing elite with it is something that can't really be described. (I also have move not even worth a comparison) Some of the most immersive experiences I've had with gaming, demos where you are on a high point literally make me not want to look down and give me vertigo.

In saying that. I will be putting my money with the vr that will give me the most immersion and that looks to be valves vr (I'm saying this because my PC is far more powerful than a PS4 which really helps). There are so many VR headsets being released. I will say that if you can get a vr headset, it will be worth it, even at a marked up price.

They have Dead or Alive Extreme 3 with Honoka-chan and Marie-Rose-desu-chan. What could be more extreme than that?

Don't think I'll get PlayStation VR until the price is more affordable. Unless they announce Half Life 3 exclusive to VR :p.
