My dog and this snake had a stand-off at my backdoor last night. The snake eventually got away. I don't know what snake it is. Can somebody help identify it.

Thanks.

Looks a bit like a puff adder, can't see if it's a coffin shaped head though.

WARNING! Stay clear if it is a puff adder. Don't kill it, just be very cautious if/when relocating him/her.

Yeah the head doesn't look like a puff adder is what I thought also

the thickness and short skinny tail tell me it is though. Granted I don't know a LOT about snakes, other than the ones we found around property and puff adders were abundant.

looks like a Causinae aka Night adder.

When I used to live in durban, we once found one in our backyard in the process of swallowing a fat frog. Awesome memories :D

If it is a puff adder, they are hella dangerous. Make very very sure you don't get bitten

Does look like a Puff adder, but yeah can't really see the head properly, either way stay the heck away from it, or get professionals to remove it if it hangs around.

holy fek dude, you need to be careful and make sure your dog doesn't try anything heroic either :(

If it is a Night Adder, it's not deadly but you are still correct: be careful, especially with the dog.

From Wikipedia:

In spite of their enormously developed venom glands, night adders do not always use them to subdue their prey. The venom would act fast enough, but often they simply seize and swallow their prey, instead.[7]

Causus venom is weak and tends only to dribble from the fangs, so relatively little is ever injected. Envenomation normally causes only local pain and swelling.[2] Antivenin treatment should not be necessary. Nevertheless, South African polyvalent serum is known to be effective against the venom of at least two species.[9]

No recent deaths have been reported due to this species. Earlier reports of fatalities were based on anecdotal evidence; the species involved likely were not properly identified or the cases were grossly mismanaged.[9]

Friend of mine who is into this type of thing ( Huge collection of snakes) Says its either a Night Adder or a Common Egg Eater.
She needs a better photo to make a positive ID though. She asked if you could see if the snake was shiny or dull?
