Police Raid Graf_Chokolo's House

Graf_chokolo, who has contributed countless things to the PS3 scene, had his private home raided by police this morning. They confiscated all of his "accounts" and anything related to PS3 hacking. Some of you may remember that graf_chokolo promised if he was pushed, that he would release all of his PS3 hypervisor knowledge to the world. He kept good on this promise releasing what is being dubbed as the Hypervisor Bible. "The uploaded files contains his database which is a series of tools for the PS3′s Hypervisor and Hypervisor processes. It will help other devs to reverse engineer the hypervisor of PS3 further."

I don’t know how to say this but graf_chokolo, the man who contributed a lot to the scene has recently been caught off by Sony and the Police. They went to his house to grab all his accounts and stuff, yeah could be anything related to his findings on the PS3 security.

Guys, SONY was today at my home with police and got all my stuff and accounts. So be careful from now on.

He keep his promised though by releasing all his knowledge on the HV reversing. The uploaded files contains his database which is a series of tools for the PS3′s Hypervisor and Hypervisor processes. It will help other devs to reverse engineer the hypervisor of PS3 further. You can find the following (Based on the folders in the archive):

* Dump LV2 Reversing
* HV Dump of 3.15 Reversing
* HV Dump of 3.41 Reversing
* HV Dump of 3.55 Reversing
* Payloads

Guys, i don’t joke, it’s serious.
And to prove it, i kept my word and uploaded all my HV reversing stuff.

Upload it everywhere so SONY couldn’t remove it easily. Grab it guys, it contains lots of knowledge about HV and HV procs.

Because quite clearly they are the two individuals that directly promoted piracy and wrote toolkits specifically to that purpose, RIGHT?!

Oh. Wait.
No that wasn't them; Silly me!

I suppose that it is conceivable that they did nothing to facilitate breaching the
contract that Playstation 3 users accept by using that product.

It may be possible that they were naive to the point of not thinking that what
they unearthed would ever be used for nefarious porpoises.

It depresses me. its brainwashed people like this who give Companies like Activision the power to do what they want...

What. What? Does one not first need to have a brain in order for it to be washed? :p

Seriously though, if you can't abide the terms and conditions, don't use the product.

Hey, here's an idea.
Every time someone dies in a car accident, an executive from Ford, Toyota, Nissa, etc - must get sued and go to jail.

First and foremost, George never "signed" that "contract".
He never even owned a PSN account!

Just because cars were used to kill people, does not mean you go after the people who made them possible.

Did George do what he did SPECIFICALLY to open piracy?
Did Henry Ford build the car SPECIFICALLY to kill people?

No to both.

Was it due to a whole different demographic that these 2 things both ended up being abused?

Yes to both.

If every inventor in Earth's history had to sit back for 28 years thinking through if somehow, someone, somewhere would use his research or inventions for nefarious purposes...
We would all still be eating with our hands, living in caves, and thinking the world is flat.

Do you think we should sue the scientist who discovered DNA? I mean... his research directly lead to the advent of chemical warfare by synthetic viruses...
Should we sue the engineer who designed the first intercontinental rocket? His rocket was after all used for firing German V2 rockets at various countries. Oh wait... that same tech took us to the moon too...

Quote from Wernher Von Braun (Engineer of the V2 rocket)
Science does not have a moral dimension. It is like a knife. If you give it to a surgeon or a murderer, each will use it differently.
I always shoot for the sky, but sometimes I hit London.
The rocket is a vehicle. You cannot hold me responsible for how it's owners use it, or what they put into it.

/Is completely bamboozled by the above argument and departs the scene with his tail between his legs.

Since when did you sign a contract to buy a PS3?????

Not to buy one, but to use one.

It hought I had to agree to some terms and conditions when I was setting up my PS3, just as I had to when I did the same for my Xbox 360, but it is not inconcievable that I confused that with something else.

Senile dementia.... :o

To clarify, you only get ToS on PS3 when you signup for PSN account; And when you update firmware.
Legally speaking though, I could loan a PS3 from a friend, already updated; I didn't agree to any ToS at that point, ever.

I like what they are doing- in terms of re-enabling other OS.

Piracy will happen somehow, but still Sony started this when they disabled that feature that some, if few, people use.

I understand that Sony reserves the right to do that, but it set a VERY bad precedent, which started with losing all backwards compatability. Adding to the fact that according to the dcma that they love to throw at us, it is now allowed.

I can't find now if his work was more around piracy or not, if it was then Sony still went overboard with the raid, I mean really now? If you want to antagonise people, go randomly raid another person's house.

I can practically see a Sony exec walking in there after the Police, lighting a cigar and saying, "Well now look what we have here."

If there was no work done to help piracy then this was waay out of line.

@Phoenix IMO ToS are far too restrictive now with what you can do. EULAs are being thrown out of court occasionally when brought up.
This situation is complicated as both sides have made errors, though Sony's run far deeper than just the PS section.
(I know my post is a little argumentative, but it would be nice to get a little discussion about mainly EULAs)
