Hi all,

Inspired by a sentence in another thread, post your 3DMark11 / Vantage scores here, for a bit of comparison and to discuss it if you want to.

The reason for my creating this thread is due to the fact that i think my score is rather low for my rig... and would like to ask you all some questions about it. Perhaps we can 'templatise' this to keep it easy to read?

I'll go first:

CPU: Intel i7 - 920 2.67 @ 2.67
MB: Asus ROG Rampage 2 Gene
RAM: 12 Gigabytes of DDR3-1333 (running at 1066 for ??? reason)
GPU: MSI ATI Radeon 7950 3GB TwinFrozr2 - 850MHz core @ 1000MHz
3DMark 11 Score: 7735 (Performance preset)

Is this too low for my system? Is this too high for my system? Any tricks to improve this?

I think that's pretty much what you can expect from your system. You can improve results if you OC the CPU a little, and make sure your system isn't running too much crap in the background. Resource heavy anti-virus and anti-spyware tend to slow your system down a bit, as well as having too many random tools and apps running. Using the latest drivers is usually also a good idea, just keep in mind that sometimes it influences these synthetic tests negatively while actual game performance can increase.

All right, here I go.

My system when these scores were created:

CPU: Intel i7 2600K @ 5.05Ghz
MB: Asus P8P67 WS Revolution (Rev 3.0)
RAM: 8 GB GSkill ARES DDR3-1600MHz 1.5V CL9
GPU: Inno3D GeForce GTX 680 2GB @ 1275Mhz Core, 3385Mhz Memory

3DMark 11 Score: P11019
3DMark Vantage Score: P34873

I'm looking to add a second GTX680 at some point, just not sure when, bit of an expensive exercise... I typically run my system OC'd when I game, so I posted the OC scores. Stock scores for this system are:

3DMark 11 Score: P8898
3DMark Vantage Score: P29444

I was thinking of upping the CPU a bit, but running a stock Intel cooler at the moment, and it's damn loud when I start gaming. Will up this a bit when I get the Corsair H80.

Also, the RAM is clocking itself down to 1066, and when I set it to 1333, I get the "overclock problem something" message at POST, so not sure what to do there :(

Then regarding the GPU, I set the Core to 1000 from 850, then the GPU temps hit around 66-68 degrees in FarCry3 on Ultra settings... is this okay? Can I clock it to 1100(MSI Afterburner has 1100 as the limit)? Then also, do I change the memory clock?

The H80 is a very nice cooler and will make a massive difference. I didn't have space in my case and liked it too much to cut some room, so opted for a Zalman CNPS9900 Max air-cooler instead. You'll find that just getting away from stock cooler will already make a huge difference.

Running wPrime 1024M test with 8 cores i measured:

Stock cooler, stock clock, 232 seconds, 68 degrees peak
Stock cooler, 4.4Ghz, crash after 37%, 85 degrees
Zalman cooler, stock clock, 228 seconds, 46 degrees peak
Zalman cooler, 4.63Ghz, 188 seconds, 65 degrees peak
Zalman cooler, 5.05Ghz, 167 seconds, 83 degrees peak

Not exactly sure what the problem is there without knowing the exact error. The problem I had was that upping my FSB kept OC'ing my RAM further than they could handle, limiting the CPU clock. I had to set the multipliers down so that upping the FSB wouldn't push it over 1600. Luckily the Asus mobos, especially the ROG boards, make tuning those settings very easy.

If the motherboard came with Asus AI Suite, don't be afraid to experiment with the Auto-Tune feature. It helps give a nice, safe baseline from where you can really start tweaking. Used that to get mine to 4.63Ghz, and then tweaked further to eventually break the 5Ghz barrier.

66-68 degrees doesn't sound too rough, but keep in mind the effect on the rest of the system. If the card is close to other components it might raise their temps too much over long periods. If possible, up the memory clocks a bit as well. Cards as powerful as the 7950 are rarely taxed fully, often games are more CPU intensive, but every little bit helps.

I'll need to do some research, but 1000Mhz for the 7950 already sounds like quite a decent core speed increase. You might want to rather up memory instead of pushing core to 1100Mhz. I'd recommend running Kombustor (should be included with latest versions of Afterburner) as it will stress test the card. If you notice tearing and if the system eventually resets, lower the core clock again.

Haha! Yeah, these types of threads tend to be like that, hey, but so long as no one takes it too seriously, there's nothing wrong with a friendly conversation around performance and how to improve it :)
