Power spike

Good morning all!

My pc is acting very strangely and i hope someone might be able to shed some light on this. Ive got a i5 2500k running on a msi z68 mobo. 2 hdd installed - 1 1tb and 1 500gb. After my dog strangled herself almost on my power cables my pc froze up completely only booting into windows twice and never again. My bios is seeing both drives but only sees one as a boot option (1tb) which was not my boot drive. It does however 'see' the hdd plugged into the sata port. I tried to re-install windows (setup sees both drives). I formatted both but setup cannot create system partitions an wont let me install. My pc seems ine otherwise..... Temps stay in range, no screen corruption, no memory errors. Can it be that only the hdd's went and nothing else or must i claim whole pc from insurance?

Thanks guys and gals!

Have you tried checking the parts in a friends machine. That way always tells you if something is working or not.

Wait let me get this straight, the dog almost strangled on the actual kettle power cable, or inside the case on some of the power cables... if the latter is the case then I guess the PCB's on your HDD's got damaged and maybe even the sata cables.

Use computer manager to check if there's anything wrong with the 500GB. If not, maybe do a diagnostic on it, see how it handles copying files now. If it starts to hang or give you a cycling error... well I guess you know what that means.

Odds of both HDDs dying due to same power surge is super rare. IVe nbever had a hard drive die on me and ive seen every power trip imaginable. This includes my friends drunk and naked sister streaking through the garage we were lanning in tripping and fortunately her face broke her fall right against the switch box cutting out the mains :D

Best is that 8 okes in unison told her to GTFO she ruined a Generals game haha .

Sounds like it could be a power problem so first thing to try is another PSU unit in your box to see if it isnt a lack of power.

If you near Pmb I have a spare cable for PSU somewhere in my cupboard
