Power supply recommendations

Hi Everyone

I would like to tap into the collective intelligence of the interwebs here! Need to get myself a decent power supply for my machine. It is a high-end rig so need a decent one but I don’t want to break the bank!

Any suggestions?

Well, how much are you looking to spend?

How many, and what graphics cards are you running?

How much RAM, and what CPU?

How many Hard drives?

Do you want to overclock?

Hi Tinman

I have 2 Hard drives but looking to expand. I have a Core 2 Duo (so no quad core). I have 1 GFX but its a powe hungry GTX 275. No overclocking (with my luck I'll blow stuff up). I have 4gig of mem (DDR2)

I cant really name a price Im looking to spend, otherwise I could just search for it on the web based on price. I need something good, but not a 1000WATT monster that costs 3k. Closer to the 700 Watt mark. I need true power (no cheap crap). It doesnt need to be super silent or anything but should not get hot.

I have an Antec p180 case

Well, with a rig like that, a 520W/620W PSU would be more than enough. My choice would be between the Thermaltake Toughpower TR2 550 or the Corsair HX520/620W.

I've got one of these:

It's a 750W, but there is one MASSIVE 12V rail.
The reason I mention this, is because I had a 680W power supply with Dual Rail trying to run my rig and it would randomly switch off. I eventually discovered that it was due to the lack of AMPS on the 12V rail for my GTX280. (after putting a 500W power supply purely for my GFX card and the 680W running the rest of the machine)

Now you mentioned you have a GTX 275, which is also pretty Juice hungry. I would recomment the corsair supplies purely for the Graphics card and the single 12V rail AMP requirements.

I agree. I got the Corsair 650w. I got a huge system and my psu got more than enough power. They always underrate there power supply. Example is the VX450w is actually a 550w

if you want to go a bit cheaper, this is a really great psu and will be more than enuff for you.

2 x 22amp 12v rails!

I run a rig with a 4890 off the 520W version with no problems, but i hear this 600W is really fantastic; many people very impressed with it.

I just bought a Corsair TX650 from Prophecy. These Corsair PSU's have good reviews from all over, that's why I went for it. I should have gone modular though (Corsair HX), there are too many unused cables in my box.
