Powering an external drive

I have a 2.5" external drive that I'd like to plug into my home theatre but my receiver's USB port doesn't put out enough juice to power the drive.

So, my plan is to bridge the two with a powered USB hub, but I'm not sure how much power would be required from it to do the trick.

Any ideas?

The two hubs I'm considering are this D-Link one and this Transcend one, but I'm not sure if either is suited to the task?

This may seem like a dumb question but what file format is your external at the moment, if its not fat32 that might be a issue as well.

Gotta be careful as some of those cases do not have a step down to what go's in go's in at 100%. I have blown 2 drives with the wrong plugs already.

As far as I remember most need about 600mA to 800mA, perhaps try getting a dual usb to mini usb cable?

Got the dlink one atm got 2x 2.5" externals and phone charger and 2 ps3 controllers in it and have no problems

It is indeed FAT32. Daft receiver doesn't support anything else.

Only one port on the receiver, unfortunately.

That's rad, if it can manage that then I'm sure one external drive will be fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions, dudes.
