Preparing for Battlefield 4 - SA price comparison for GPUs

How can one place have the Radeon HD7990 6GB GDDR5 for R9666.00 and another place the same thing for R13649.00?

That is a R4000.00 difference in price.

Some retailers are working with their distributors to lower the local price to match the international price drops made by AMD. Other retailers don't seem eager to do anything about it.

Or maybe they don't need to, because the next generation is right around the corner? Most retailers in the last week have changed the card's status to "Out of stock" or "Contact for availability." September 25th is only a week and a bit away...

What do you call they ps4 and xbone then? Aren't they just upgrade of their fellow consoles?

They are indeed, but Battlefield 4 will be coming to the PS3 and Xbox 360. Anyone not upgrading to a new console this year or the next won't have to upgrade to get into the action.

Might be a scaled down version on the current consoles though. Its actually probably going to the same as BF3 with new maps and weaponry.

So neither do most most people, if your pc could run bf3 then it can run bf4, this article for those looking at the higher end of the scale. I have still have a 560ti and its still running plenty of games at Xbox 360 levels, just because bf4 doesn't mean I have to buy a new gpu, just like it means I don't need a ps4.

Ok I'm gonna bring some petty maths in here.

On day one a pc game is roughly R200 cheaper than it's console counterpart. So if we assume one game a month, saving R200 a month seems a fair assumption.
So if I upgrade my GPU once every 2 years then that's R4800 saving over those 2 years. However after accounting for inflation at 7% the present value is R4467.02 in today's pocket.

Now since I will be upgrading my pc I will sell my previous card, new it was R3 500 so 2nd hand I'll say R1 500 with the box etc, maybe settle at R1 000.

So here is my point, playing on PC means you can effectively spend R5 500 (maybe R7 000 depending on what you trade in etc) upgrading your PC every year and be in roughly the same pocket position as a console gamer. Now I'm sure there are those who don't buy I game every month but I'm making an assumption on a gamer with a gaming pc wanting to use the thing.

And you not even considering Steam sales. I have both, I enjoy both, to me they both have their negatives and positives.

Sorry for ignorance here, I have lost touch specially with benchmarks and performance of graphics cards since leaving the IT industry.

I have a AMD HD5970, just wondering how this would perform given BF4, I know it is a fairly old card but I currently play BF3 with max settings on 1680x1050 @ 120~140fps.

Hoping (guessing) I should need to upgrade card and that it should suffice, I know the card was a beast back in the day. Just wondering how it would perform under todays tech, specifically for BF4 (obviously).

Thanks,
Beo...

If you can play BF3 then you can play BF4.

It runs on the same engine but you might get worse performance with the destruction overhaul (not sure if they are using higher res textures compared to BF3)

Hi all. Just preordered BF4 from Kalahari. And getting a 27 inch 1440 p monitor. Have the MSI 7950 Twinfrozr, 3570K, 8Gb Ram. Hope I can take it to 1440p :-/

You will probably see a slight dip to 100-120fps, maybe dropping to 90fps because DICE has been optimising BF4 to use new things like GPU compute, with the HD7000 series excels at. You should still see a lot of eye candy, though.

I do recommend that you look at AMD's latest beta drivers that include frame pacing as well. Even the HD5970 sees a nice playability boost using those drivers, though it only works for certain games ATM.

Anyone going to be playing BF4 on their laptop? If yes, what are the specs? And have you played BF3 on the same laptop?
