Problem with steam

This afternoon I opened up the steam app, it said that it was updating steam so I waited a minute, halfway through the update the whole app just terminated with no explanation or even a windows error message, it just disappeared. When I click on the steam shortcut it says that the link no longer exist? The original steam.exe is now replaced by steamtmp.exe , but when that is clicked it says that "steam is temporarily unavailable, please try again later" .

Can I reinstall steam without having to reinstall all my games and lose all my stats in MW2?

uuuummmmm you have just lost all your stats and everything with it.... sorry mate.

Just kidding roflmao :P

Just re-install steam and type in ur account details everything should still be there when u log back in... :D

you should have all your stats since they are logged on your account, not in the steam.exe file.

Almost gave me a heart attack there... :D

Yeah thanks guys, got it sorted. I had to uninstall/re-install steam, then re-install every game  . At least all is good now.

I was super stoked to see all my stats still there, even if it only was two nights worth of gaming.

Steam thou art a heartless bitch...:D

Were you not able to simply move your game cache files out of the steam directory before reinstalling? I presume reloading steam and copying those cache files back in place should allow steam to just do a few things here and there then make use of them again without needing to re-download?

Someone that knows steam a little bit better could comment on the above.

I'm not 100% sure about that, it might well be that I could have just copied the cache files to the newly installed steam content folder thus saving the time of reinstalling every game. My knowledge and understanding of steam is very limited as I have not used the program that often.

That support link is speaking about using the backup feature or when you simply want to verify existing data in an existing steam set-up but I am rather certain if you had to reload steam copy the steamapps folder and did the same it should restore your data for you with no or minimal download.

Next time maybe try that and see how it goes. Do let me know the result if and when that time comes.

I had this happen to me some time ago, all i did was copy\backup my cache data. Reinstalled steam, copy the data back and launch steam. Once logged in steam will do a check and verify the data in the cache folder.

Im guessing it also repairs links between the data and you account.

Thanks for the link :D

I did go to the games properties, but the "check file cash" option was grayed out so I could not click on it. I think the problem was also that my steam folder was located in the valve folder, when I reinstalled steam it placed it in its own folder separate from valve, I should have copied the files from the valve folder to the newly created steam folder. I think then the "cache" would have worked.

Well at least I know now for the future :)
