Protip: don't upgrade your graphics card yet

I was gonna go "but, but, but" anyways.... but then this happened:

If you’re not interested in the latest high-end technology and would be comfortable grabbing current AMD 6000 series or Nvidia 500 series cards, you should also hold off on upgrading.

Coz I'm running a 4890 and I'm pretty sure it might last a while still. But might also consider a upgrade, but this sounds good now :D

But... Okay fine, as long as the wait isn't going to be overly long. It's time for my 5770 to make way for a successor. :)

There is a time to buy a new graphics card, but that time isn’t now.

Rather hold off for a month, or two, or three, or even four if you have too. You’ll have access to a range of new exciting technology available at aggressive prices, or slightly older but still capable technology at clearance sale pricing.

Seriously? Nope...This is SA buddy, no one drops prices when new hardware launches..it usually takes more than a year for prices to drop on previous gen hardware. Ask me I know, I have been in the hardware game for a long time. There is no such thing as a bargain in SA, especially when it comes to high end hardware.

As for what's coming...7950 is launching within the next 2- 3 weeks, the card offers pretty close performance to the 7970 with a lower price and the same overclocking awesomeness, with the 7870 and 7850 launching right after that. March brings us the 7990, Nvidia's new cards are still a myth, with no specs, actual date of release or any real facts. What I do know is that the Flagship Nvidia card will not be releasing any time soon, most likely a late Q3 or Q4 release.

As it stands AMD have the market to themselves and rightly so, the 7970 is miles ahead of any of today's offerings and it'll take something really special to beat it.

As for the price of the 7970..Unfortunately we live in the ass end of the world. where resellers and suppliers take advantage. 7970's can be bought in the states for roughly the same price as a GTX580 3Gb.

I was hoping the 7850 would be a sub R3000 card, alas it doesn't look that way going by the specs... :(

ATIBoy

7950 is already available from Gigabyte distributor.. R1000 less ex vat what the current price of the 7970 is =/

BUT, there is no reference design, only the Wind Force edition is available. I was looking at getting 2 of them but I would need reference coolers for Crossfire.

They aren't allowed to sell them yet. Mmmm Ima try get my hands on one lol :D
also Gigabyte is usually a lot more expensive when it comes to Graphics cards, so I reckon a club 3D one would be another R800 cheaper.

Humour me the top 5xxx card VS the top 6xxx card, 10 fps difference ?

Got the 560gtx ti asus zomg top already at very good price, I'd doubt it would be something to slit my wrists over just because I didn't buy one generation up. Besides it's better to wait for the 2nd generation of a generation before *just* buying, because then you get the "ti" instead of the "normal" iteration. That is not going to be in next 2-3 months...

How much for that 3dfx card?

I get the feeling that gaming is becoming a question of buying a GFX card with maybe a bit of PC attached. 6.5k for a card that loses value faster than a Greek IOU....meh...this sucks.

My voodoo 3200 was R1600.

Meh, I always happen to buy hardware a few months just before the "next big thing". I suppose you can never win in the computing world. Ah well, I am happy with my 6850 :)

Part of the reason why want to crossfire my 6870 or rather just one new 7950 if reasonable. i was surprised i could barely play batman ac on full graphics

Well no, if you're happy with the card you have then why bother considering a upgrade?
I am never happy with Gpu's lol..I almost always find fault and you're quite right.

When gaming, lets take BF3. 6970 vs GTX580 @ 1920x1080
There is roughly 10-15 fps difference and that is really not noticable.

well i think i will keep my 6870, still working with most games ... thing i need to upgrade now is the RAM, mobo and CPU as well as get a proper PSU ... core2 with DDR2 aint cutting it no more :(

Same here. My 6870 is still doing wonders for me. But I think I think my phenom II 810 needs to be replaced, maybe the ram as well.

I purchased a 6870 last year. New graphics cards usually keep me happy for 3 years or so, but then I don't usually play the latest and greatest titles on release with maximum graphical detail enabled.

I'm in need of an upgrade. My old GTX285 SLI setup is starting to show its age...never been an ATI fan. Is it going to be worth it to go for the 7950's then?

I got myself a GTX560Ti just a couple of months ago. Unfortunately this warning comes just too late :P

But it performs great. It can even handle BF3 on ultra. (I generally play on high though to keep my frames well above 40). Maybe when Keplar releases, I can get another 560Ti at real cheap to SLI it :)
