PS3 XMB Slow Loading

Hey guys,

I noticed yesterday that my PS3's menu all of the sudden takes forever to load up.
Where it usually loaded in a matter of seconds, it now takes in excess of 25 seconds for the menu to appear. I tested it through startup, as well as other scenarios ie quitting a game or movie. Does the same. Wallpaper appears but the menu icons takes quite long. Well, noticeably longer than before.

I havent added anything extra recently to the hdd. as a matter of fact, on my 250gb i still have 160gb free. I did notice that during the loading time for the menu the hdd light is on indicating hdd is being accessed.

Any ideas why this is?
I read somewhere that it could indicate a corrupt hdd but dont wanna go through the whole backup thing and waste time.
I also updated the console this weekend if that is of any interest.

Try it with another HDD perhaps. I'd back up your saves just in case though, it sounds like the drive may be saying its last goodbyes.

It should do, since it's so new.

Have you tried restoring factory settings? Wiping the drive and starting over?

I'm also having some problems with my console. Ever since I updated to the new 3.21 firmware my PS3 has started to freeze a lot. It has frozen before, but not nearly as much as now. It froze like 4 times last night, 3 times during gameplay and once in the XMB.

Hmmm I actually downloaded the 3.21 patch now at work, don't think I am going to update my system today with it. Good luck guys, hope the PS3 gets sorted.

Tbh I havn't had any issues regarding the 3.21 update and I did a whole series of updates over the weekend from Thursday and all seems to be hundreds, if I come across anything i'll be sure to let you guys know :)

I don't know if it's the new firmware or just my console giving crap. My PS3 is only about 8 months old now and it really didn't freeze as much before, so I'm inclined to believe it is the new firmware although I haven't heard of anybody else who has problems with the console freezing after the update.

I've had no problems since the update, the only time my PS3 freezes is when I play BFBC2 online.

Hmmm, two of the four freezes last night was with BFBC2, but it never froze before last night. Also, Just Cause 2 froze for the first time in the 14 hours that I've played it.

I dont have any issues with reguards to the update, that didnt affect my menu. I have both the slim and 60gb versions. They work fine. Must be something else.

I've been playing Battlefield and Just Cause 2 the whole night and it hasn't frozen again yet, so I doubt it is/was the new firmware. Fuck if I know what the problem is, but I hope my PS3 doesn't die. If it does, I'm done with consoles for now (unless it dies while still under warranty). There is no way in hell I'm shelling out another R4000+ for a new console, I'd rather save up for a new PC in anticipation of The Witcher 2.

Dude, when I still owned one I eventually swopped my Xbox 4 times in total in about two years....mission!!! every single time it RROD'd...

Anyway, I backed up all my stuff (PS3) last night and then set in motion a full format...had to leave it overnight as total running time at start was 14+ hours!!!!! so hopefully, if nothing went wrong, by the time I get home today I will restore the backup and check it out.

However, before starting the full format, I did quick format but it didnt show any positive results.

I wanted to ask, if I have to have the PS3 swopped, what is the correct way to transfer data? Via the backup tool, or the data transfer tool. According to the description, I would think the Data Transfer tool as the data will go onto a new system, right?

I forgot to mention that it was freezing before the firmware update.

So I backed up all my stuff (excess of 2 hours), then ran a full format on the drive (14+ hours), and then ran a full restore.
It appears that the system is a bit faster. As a precaution I will back up my drive weekly in case it bombs and I need to have it swopped.

I don't think it's necessary to do a full backup every week. Do it once and from there just save your gamesaves on a flashdisk. Unless the games you're playing don't allow that.

A number of PS3 owners are reporting running into system problems after downloading firmware update 3.21.

The mandatory update, which removes the capability to install alternative operating systems, released in early April, just months after iPhone hacker George Hotz claimed to have breached security measures on the console through the Install Other OS feature.

But multiple system owners have reported encountering problems since updating their console with the latest firmware, including disc read errors, locked PSN accounts, and even systems that fail to boot up at all.

It’s by no means the first time Sony has run into problems following PS3 firmware updates.

We’ve dropped the company a line for comment.
