PSU died, need some input on getting a replacement

MalicE

Party time! Excellent!
I have 3 options that fit my budget

Raidmax

Thermaltake

Gigabyte

I've been running the same old AOpen 500w for many years now so I have no clue what's considered a good PSU anymore. Any advice would be appreciated? :D

Take a look at the corsair brand as well, they are build to last.

Generally the longer the warranty, the better the quality.

The Corsair VS 550W seems to be just above your budget at R600

my budget is R650 :D

but I take it that's not at takealot and pre-postage price

R30 isn't a big difference, and with a psu you never wanna skimp.
You should buy the absolute best you can afford, even if you are pushing the budget slightly.
plus the R90 postage :p

but are you sure that 480W will be enough to pull my system seeing as my current 500W wasn't up to the tast apparently :(

so many things to consider...

Wouldn't it be better to buy a cheaper one while saving up for a more expensive rig?

Bit off-topic but if a PC shuts down randomly (usually once a week) is the PSU failing or perhaps not big enough?
Seems to be happening allot while i am playing FF:ARR.

Send me your exact system specs and I will work it out for you.
but that 480w should be more than enough.

Could be a lot of things, sounds like a heat or psu issue though.

I had a machine that did that as well, and it did turn out to be the PSU

Well it hasn't restarted since i cleaned it out (there was almost no dust and the last time i cleaned it was around April, the dust filter under the case that leads to the PSU was a bit dirtier then the other filters)

If it does happen again then i will go look for a PSU around the 800W range.

I have:

Intel i5 (think it's the entry lvl 2.3ghz)
standard intel mobo, nothing fancy
4gb ram
ATI HD5770 (to be replaced by a HD7870 at the end of the year)
3 SATA drives
1 SATA DVD writer
....yeah I think that's all of it

I had a similar spec'd PC (I had a Quad Core instead of the i5, which I'm pretty sure was less power efficient) with a 550W extreme Cooler Master, it ran my PC perfectly but was horribly loud.

What I'd suggest is that you check this site out to compare PSUs (It.Is.Brilliant!):

http://www.realhardtechx.com/index_archivos/Page541.htm

I'd go with the Be Quiet 430/530 or a Corsair CX430M (Modular PSUs are AWESOME!)

Update for 7870:

AMD recommends at least a 500W for the 7870

If you upgraded the gpu you will still be well within the 480w bud. Simple as that.
Its a good quality unit, its semi modular, its got good warranty and in all honesty you can't go wrong with it.

so AMD is in cahoots with the psu suppliers when they recommend you get a 600w, the sneaky bastids! :p

oh yeah, I got 3 extractor fans running as well (1 with LEDs), but I guess that won't make a big difference :D
