Question about ADSL disconnects

My ADSL disconnects a couple of times per day... The internet light on the router just goes red and then I need to turn the router off and back on again in order to get it working again. I can't even connect via Network Connections from the pc itself when in that state.

Is this due to Telkom, the router, ISP or is that just what ADSL lines do in general?

In Nelspruit, I used to have a Billion 800G router and never had this problem. However, that router was assassinated by lightning and I've had the problem ever since. Since then, I've used a Netgear router, some other Telkom brand and currently using a Billion 400. I've also moved to Centurion since then so my initial thoughts that the line got somehow damaged by the lightning also seems to be invalid since the problem persists here.

My router is set to connect automatically to my OpenWeb uncapped account, but I do have some capped ISP accounts set up in my Network Connections that I can use from time to time.

wrong forum for this...most of the pros are over at mybb.

be that as it may - no its not supposed to disconnect. on a good setup you can have month long uptime.

easiest way to troubleshoot - buy some extra cap (afrihost or axxess) prepaid cap. clear the OW details from the router and replace the with AH. Find the place where it lists the WAN uptime. record that. then go to work. when you get back you can calculate whether the line dropped or not. you could also use the telkom guest account for this (just google it) if nobody needs to use the line during those X hours.

you should also post your sync speed and line stats here. just eyeballing your post, i'd say 50/50 chance between line and router. overall your post screams line, but the fact that you need to reset the router suggests maybe bad router.

also, you get software that you set up & it monitors the line stats non-stop...then it draws you a pretty graph. haven't used it to troubleshoot, but its out there and might help.

I tend to try my luck here first as this is my preferred forum for everything. MyBB is like a last resort. :)

The router should be fine. This is probably my 3rd or 4th router since the 800g and the problem was on all of them. I actually work from home which is why the disconnects can be rather frustrating during the day and sometimes I start to download something before going to bed which is why the disconnects are frustrating during the night (not to mention gaming over weekends).

Here are the stats that I can see from the router. I have no idea what these values mean, but here goes. It has been 3.5 hours since my last router restart.
DSP Firmware Version=E.25.41.55 A
Connected=true
Operational Mode=G.Dmt
Annex Type=AnnexA
Upstream=512000
Downstream=4096000
SNR Margin(Upstream)=12 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream)=11.5 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream)=24.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream)=43.5 dB
CRC Errors(Upstream)=3204
CRC Errors(Downstream)= 0
Latency(Upstream)=Fast
Latency(Downstream)=Fast

yep thats a line fault. telkom techie will have to troubleshoot it.

the stats all suggest that its pretty borderline, but the fact that there are crc errors says its on the wrong side of borderline.

should be back on the right side of borderline after they fix the fault....possibly even much better (low chance though - looks like your far away from the exchange).

Thanks, will start the frustrating process with Telkom on Monday.
Would have repped you if I could :)

CRC Errors is either a line fault at the exchange or it is a router/modem fault so I would try another router first to see if it gives the same errors.

Yep... Plus this modem is from Telkom... If it is broke, they must replace.

Well the reason why I said it was the router is cause I had that same problem with my Billion 400g and when I got a TP-Link I never had that problem again.

I had exactly the same issue, it turned out to be a heat problem, I realised that it did it more frequently on hotter days than colder ones, eventually I replaced the router and problem solved. but I did that because I just lost my temper trying to get it fixed as everytime I took it to Telkom, they said nope, working fine
