Questions before I buy new rig... What's a heatsink?

One more question. I see people using some thermal cream on the processor and heatsink. Never seen this stuff before in computer shops, any idea where can get it locally in pta?

its come with the CPU and heatsink

dude seriously, look for another mobo, don't settle for rubbish

I'll look into it man, maybe I can cut some corners on some things and try get a better one. Thanks for warning

Gimaru, I think that you'd be better off making the following changes to your proposed rig:

CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition (200MHz slower than the 965, but should be around R200 cheaper)
MOBO: ASUS M4N78SE (Full ATX board, gigabit ethernet, good manufacturer, also uses DDR2)

I'm assuming that you already have the DDR2 RAM and optical drive? I'm not sure exactly what MyGaming's policy is on posting links to a site that you run (am going to PM mods now), so I've PM'ed you a recommendation.

Yup don't get such a trashy motherboard, sorry I didn't know it was that bad. Rather cut corners on the CPU or the RAM then the Motherboard and PSU. Try places like PC international, prophecy or zaps, also see what Ratwiz has suggested.

The motherboard I'm going to get is trashy... But as I said I'm already a bit over budget and really can't squeeze any more out. Here is link to motherboard I'm getting. It's Jetway.

Dude, dont get that Mobo, I have bought a cheapo Jetway one before and it have numerous issues. I also bought a more expensive on later on and it also gave issues. So my advice is to go for another make. Asus do have mobo's from R600 so just check them out.

If I find an ASUS motherboard for R600ish, should I get that then? I really don't want to go worse on the processor (I've cut as many corners as I can so far, and really want that cpu).

I'll start searching for cheap ASUS board.

Someone buy my bloody stuff in swap/buy/sell topic so I can afford it! :D

Just be careful not to buy a gpu with a passive cooler as they are useless in African heat.

Okay First of all you forgot to add sybaritic delivery cost(unless you collecting)

Motherboard go check your local pc shops they might have some great mother board for a steal, they want to get rid of since motherboard always stay long on the rack.
My choices are asrock and MSI I have had to much shit with asus compatibility.

CPU go for it :)

Gpu just saw they don't have it anymore
http://www.take2.co.za/electronics-...hd5770-512mb-128-bit-gddr5-pci-e-6086235.html
R1520

Ram: You could cut out 2gig ram and buy it the next month. 2gigs still run all the games great. Save you about R400

HHD you can get a 250gig for about the same price at Take2.

Don't you have a dvd rom in you current machine or is that going to wife/kids/girlfriend?

Think that case comes with a back 120mm fan so you won't need extra cooling so you could get that as well on a later date.

Also you could lookout for esquires hhd specials they are sick sometimes.

Cpu=2000
Gpu=1600
Ram=900
HHD=380
PW=610
Case=310
DVD=240
Fans=180
Equals to
R6781+Shipping Since i only ever bought a cpu and other stuff I can say they charged me R90 just to ship the CPU.

So check where you can get it and at what price then check the shipping then split it up and get the best bang for your buck yeah its a lot of work but so what.

Prices are all from www.pcint.co.za if not mentioned otherwise.

This does come to a total of R6619 but it has a larger hard drive, better motherboard.

During my electronics course in tech we covered a range of chapters about amplifier / power supply designs, one of these included heat sink design.

My lecturer opened the chapter and said "This chapter was written for varsity moffies with no clue about practical design. The rule of thumb about heat sink design is: If there's space, fill it up with a heatsink." That was the end of the chapter.

I'm really in a pinch with money at the moment. Would the R580 (ASUS M2N68-AM SE2 AM3/2+ nforce630a Micro-ATX ) motherboard be alright for now atleast? The R800 on is just out of my reach for now.

I've done all the corner cutting I've can, just that my budget is very shaky! And a bit less than expected, with some things that came up. I can always upgrade to a better mb later on.
